It's looking like the Saturday events at Winston-Salem and Salisbury are on, but only the other organizer and I have indicated interest in the overnight portion of the trip to Charlotte, so Light Factory and Sunday visits may not occur. I suspect the rainy weather forecast for Sunday has something to do with low interest. I may opt to return home Saturday, then drive down Sunday to make dog care easier and save the hotel money for a K-1! I'll know more early this afternoon re Sunday. For now, here's what's on the docket:
Saturday, April 30th:
Reynolda House (
Current and Upcoming Exhibitions | Reynolda House Museum of American Art We’ll begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Reynolda House in Winston-Salem to view the Ansel Adams exhibit. (Cost: $14) We can view the exhibit at our leisure, and even spend some time exploring the grounds, weather permitting. Leaving late morning (11:30ish) for the roughly 1 hour drive to Salisbury, NC we will head to:
Waterworks Visual Arts Center (
http://www.waterworks.org/ourexhibitions/currentlyatwvac.html): There, we will view exhibit,
Up Close & Far Away: Through an Environmental Lens featuring artists who explore current environmental issues. Jeff Rich, a photographer whose work focuses on watershed issues ranging from recreation and sustainability to exploitation and abuse; and our own Jim Lee [several of us know Jim], whose still-life series composed of artifacts and remains, gathered in the field and photographed in his North Carolina studio will be featured in solo exhibitions.
The Center closes at 2:00, so at this point we will take some time for physical nourishment. Following lunch we will have reached a crossroads: those who are interested in continuing the journey on to Charlotte will head that way, and those who who do not will take a different path.
In Charlotte, late afternoon:
The Light Factory (
The Light Factory | Exhibitions ): is open until 6:00pm on Saturday so we have the option of attending the exhibit there. Wunderkabinett is a group exhibit featuring the work of photographers Marcus DeSieno, Daniel Kairo, Angela Franks Wells, Josh White. Following this, we have dinner, either on your own or as a group depending on how much togetherness you are in the mood for.
At this point, we reach our second crossroads. Anyone continuing on for Sunday’s activities has the option to stay overnight and convene the next day, or head home and return the next day. Either way, we won’t be officially starting our day until later Sunday morning.
Sunday, May 1st
We can start our day with a mid-morning brunch for anyone who is interested, and then:
Mint Museum UPTOWN (
https://www.mintmuseum.org/art/exhibitions/detail/here-now-80-years-of-photography-at-the-mint/ ):
Here and Now: 80 Years of Photography at the Mint. The gallery opens at 1:00 PM on Sunday. This looks to be a really interesting exhibit. We may want to spend a little time here, but then there’s even more in store…
Soco Gallery (
Orange Sunshine Release ? SOCO GALLERY ): This exhibit shows the work of Robert Lazzarini. I’m not familiar with his work, but it does look interesting. It looks like they also represent an interesting group of photographers. I’m sure some of their work is on display as well. Either way, exposing (get it?) ourselves to different styles of work is seldom a bad thing. This gallery opens at noon and closes at 5:00 on Sundays, so you could take this in either before or after the Mint Uptown exhibition.
