Hi All,
I am quite new to photography and am planning to buy a DSLR to learn further. I have a friend comming from US who is ready to bring camera for me. After quite a lot of reviews, i found Pentax k-x a very good option as compared to Canon T1i and Nikon D5000.
My question is for a beginner like me is the kit lens 18-55 sufficient right now? Or should I ask my friend to get the 55-200 or 55-300 lens as well? I ask this because I am might buy it now but may not use it extensively during the initial learning days. However on the other side, i think at this point of time, i might be getting a good deal on these add-on lens while buying the camera and kit lens.
Thanks.

Hi KMS,
Go for 55-300, it will give you more reach.
if you go by my words, buy an alternate 18-55 lens, from Sigma or Tamron. 18-50f2.8 or 17-50f/2.8

@kms. Agree with madhur. Go for 55-300. Just make sure you get the Pentax 55-300.
In spite of my advice, my friend ended up getting a Sigma 70-300 and was sold by the sales guy that Sigma is better

Thanks Madhur and Siva. I was just concerned that I might be getting the 55-300mm lens just too early in my learning path and may not utilize it. So wanted an opinion based on that. I am sure it would be a very nice lens but do I need to buy it now? I could get it possibly 6-12 months down the line as well. Plz let me know.

I guess we were saying get 55-300 now as a kit, as it would be cheaper to get as a kit than a separate lens. Otherwise, you can always start with something and buy your lenses as and when you really get a taste for that kind of work.

Image quality-wise the 55-300 is far better than the 50-200.

And also make sure, you buy non-L version. If you are not sure, what it is.. go and check in lens reviews section of this forum to find difference between these 2.
Moreover, I would suggest always start with both lenses (17)18-(50)55 and 55-300, then it will decide your photography path.. either a bird shooter or a street shooter...
