Some unexpected free time has popped up and I'm finally going to do something I've been wanting to do for years now. In a couple of weeks, I'll be driving up and down California in the hopes of having some awesome experiences. As much as I've tried to plan this out, there are just too many things I can do. I'm from California and know San Diego and Palm Springs pretty well (for someone who's not from those areas, at least), so I'm pretty much looking for suggestions to cool places. I really don't have any preferences. I plan on doing street photography (which I'm not that great at), portrait photography (a little better in that area), landscape photography (decent at that), and hopefully, some astrophotography (never done it before.)
I'll be keeping my kit as light as possible. Body, a zoom, and a couple of primes. Just enough to be able to pull off my photography goals.
The only place I know I have to go to is Joshua Tree. Other than that, I don't really know where I should prioritize. I don't have a problem driving all the way up to San Francisco, or even higher. The drive just has to be worth it.
Here are my goals:
1) Have some awesome experiences
2) Take some awesome pictures
3) Meet some cool people along the way
Let me know if anyone has any suggestions for me. Thanks!

Not sure of the slide condition of the Pacific Coast Hwy around Big Sur, so I would call and ask the CHP if you plan to go that route at all. (Julia Pfeiffer State Beach, Hearst Castle).
Kings-Sequoia national park if you like big trees and climbing Moro Rock stairs. You could overnight on the north end and pop over to Yosemite (particularly Glacier Point).
Big flying bug.
Route 395 through Ridgecrest (Trona Pinnacles) to Lone Pine (Alabama Hills) and Bishop is interesting and scenic.
Pinnacles.
Alabama Hills.
Manzanar internment camp.

We are big fans of Yosemiite. Still plenty of water for this time of the year. If you go way north - towards Chico/Shasta, then Burney Falls State Park is really a nice surprise.
We've also had a good time visiting all the missions - you're no doubt familiar with San Diego and San Luis Rey - but keep going. Each one is unique. You'll get both people and landscapes along the way.

I want to go up to Northern California to the Redwoods National Park, haven't been there yet and I'd like to.
As far as places I've found interesting - Alabama Hills, Manzanar (very impressed, not sure what I had expected but really enjoyed it), Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, Bodie State Park, Lake Tahoe, the Gold Country around Angels Camp (there's also several caverns in the area, I like Mercer), Yosemite with or without water (just go and see different things), Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks (never get bored looking at the big trees), Mono Lake, Devil's Postpile. When I stayed in Morro Bay (well, just north of there) I visited Cambria and liked that area. My favorite old-fashioned beach town is Pismo, though I also love La Jolla (having gone to school there many years ago). There's really such a huge variety of things to do that it's hard to choose. Many love Solvang but I'm not crazy about it. I've not been to San Francisco in years, and I'd like to tour Alcatraz which I've not done. Last summer I had thought to visit Lava Beds (near the Oregon border) but didn't take the time to go as it was out of my way, early in my trip and I didn't want to use one of my spare days that early as I was somewhat worried about weather problems further north. Hearst Castle is always a good place to go.
There's a number of interesting places in the desert, but that's only fun in the winter (driving Kelbaker Road, visiting the Kelso sand dunes and the Mojave visitor center/Kelso train depot, Rainbow Basin near Barstow, the Harvey House in Barstow with it's museum(s)).
I've never spent much time in Big Sur, I'd like to go back there sometime. Too bad you can't drive up Hwy 1 at the moment, not sure when the road will be re-opened.
