While Canberra does have a tower, it's a relatively quiet airport, so it's probably a good one to verify ILS processes. I think that's also why the RAAF use it for pilot training.
Quote: There seems to be a rivalry between San Diego International Airport (KSAN) and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (KDTW) on who is the legitimate owner of Top Gun. TOPGN TWO ARRIVAL at KSAN has dogfights (DOGFTs) among TMCATs. But only two call signs of the protagonists. Goose (GUUSE) and Iceman (ISEMN).
That is a very geeky thing to do, but it's fun.
Now I'm curious if there's any similarly amusing naming used in Australia.
EDIT: I just looked at the charts for Canberra airport and there's markings for POLLI (Canberra is Australia's Federal capital, so politicians), and RAZZI (ever heard of the Razzy awards?). Brisbane has a few interesting ones - WACKO, SMOKA and WOODY for example.
