That's a very versatile lens choice for APS-C aviation shots with one big if . . . IF you have access to a position on the ground (or in the air!) that can take best advantage of that POV. The same applies to the FL range of 12-24mm. As is said of real estate, "location, location, location!".
Unfortunately most enthusiasts don't have access to a field position that offers an unusual POV. While absolute IQ may be less than perfect for
many practical reasons, an unusual POV often turns a ho-hum fly-by into an appealing shot. And the crop-ability of the high MPS K5/K3/K1 sensor and faster aperture is a good compromise over the more finicky 300mm-plus lenses. Better high-speed focusing often has a beneficial advantage over max telephoto range too.
With free access to the runway and ramp, or an elbow out an open window, those two FLs have long been my lenses of choice. Long ago it was a Spotty with Adaptall SP 8-200/2.8 or 28/2.8. More recently the K5iis or K3ii with the Tamron SP AF 70-200 or Pentax 12-24. A Pz-AF 1.4x TC may play too. In all cases, location and a unique POV is the key to favorite shots.
Proximity to acft on the ramp (like a race car in the pits) can also offer unique images that augment a story better than the usual 'fly-by' shots.
Nice TBM, Rob.
