Sharing a few images of an unusual visitor to Adelaide, a CAVOK Antonov AN-12BP transporter. Snapped yesterday while parked at Adelaide Airport (ADL). As I type it is outbound from Adelaide heading northwest out of South Australia to Indonesia and then presumably Europe.
The AN-12 is a Soviet turboprop design dating back to the late 1950's developed for both military airlift and civilian use. It is broadly the Soviet equivalent of the C-130 Hercules. The Chinese also built this aircraft as the Y-8.
This particular plane was built in 1972, so now 47 years old and still trudging about. Production ended in 1972 making this one of the youngest (least old) AN-12's. It appears to have recently received a new paint job as most internet photos of it show it as painted white.
Cavok is Ukraine based and operates seven AN-12's.
Looking at FlightRadar24, looks like it flew to Adelaide from Sweden via Oman, Indonesia and Darwin, Australia, initially landing at Adelaide's Edinburgh RAAF base before later ferrying to Adelaide Airport.
