Funny timing ...I've been working on a backlog of photo processing from a trip to Japan in 2016 and have just got to the part of the trip where I arrived on Yakushima. The train is a well kept secret - my and my son's research for the trip revealed nothing of its existence.

Yakushima is about 2 hours by jet hydrofoil from the bottom of Kyushu (departs Kagoshima - western end of the Shinkansen system). Small island maybe at best 20 miles diameter and only about 13000 population, so a very quiet backwater by Japanese standards. But its key feature is the mountainous interior that rises to some 6000 feet and generates a lot of rain and lush subtropical forest - popular with in-the-know bushwalkers. I'll post some photos after my next editing session.

You're welcome! There's lots of cool railway stuff in Japan. I hope to visit the Kyoto railway museum sometime. The Chuo (maglev) shinkansen display would be cool to see, but I don't think I'd go out of my way to visit unless I knew I could see it operating.
