In 1970, I saw a string of old passenger cars as I was driving through Denver, CO. Only after my slides came back from the processor, did I realize this was an early Zephyr car; you can see that this car is "articulated" - it shares a truck with the car to its right - which was a hallmark of the first groups of Zephyr train-sets to have the locomotive distinctly separate from the cars. I eventually discovered that these cars were the original Denver Zephyr train-set of 1936, which were moved to the Texas Zephyr in 1957 when a new set of cars was built for the Denver Zephyr {yes, I know this is a mediocre image, but I didn't have much choice of where to stand when taking it - in fact I feel fortune to have gotten anything at all}
This second picture dates back to 1973, when I joined my parents and brother for what turned out to be my last family vacation with them {I was a grad student at the time}. We visited the Edaville Railroad, which provided a ride through cranberry bogs behind a small steam locomotive. Over time, Edaville went in and out of bankruptcy at least once, so I don't know if they still have the Flying Yankee. In the Flying Yankee, like all of the first batch of zephyr-like trains, the first unit was a combination locomotive and some kind of head-end passenger car {the little blonde kid is my second brother, who was born when I was a sophomore in college}
I've been looking for, and not finding yet, a picture I took in 1972 of a Zephyr train-set which was then at a fairgrounds in Iowa. That particular slide is really mediocre {badly over-exposed} because the weather was really awful. I would like to find it, though, because that particular train-set has become kind of a "Flying Dutchman" - apparently at some point it was sold to a junk dealer, and people believe that it had not been salvaged, but no one has been quite sure where it actually is.
BTW - the very first Zephyr, now called the Pioneer Zephyr, has been on display for many years at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. The last time I was there, which was roughly 30 years ago, it was parked outside next to the U-505 submarine. My understanding is that they built a new parking garage, and the Pioneer Zephyr is now inside it at the first basement level.
