Hi!
I have a chance to get Nikkor 500mm f/8.0 C, Tokina 500 f/8.0 and Tamron 500mm f/8.0 55BB, all three in good shapes and for about same price.
Which one of those would you recommend most??

Cheers
Tamron over the Tokina for optical reasons. Tamron over the Nikon for mount reasons - if you are a Pentax user.

First attempts

Here's one of my first attempts today, with my old Tamron SP 350 f5.6, using my daughter's k-r

Scaled and AWB in GIMP but otherwise straight from camera.

The EXIF says 500mm because that's what I selected for the anti-shake as closest to the effective focal length for the lens, is this the correct choice?

Can't wait for my k-30 to arrive.

Any criticism gratefully received

Regards

Kim

It's actually better to choose the closest number that is smaller than actual FL (assuming you can't set the actual length). Several of us here have done some pretty extensive tests and the SR work better, absent the actual number being available, if it thinks the lens is shorter than it really is.

Thanks, so I should set the focal length at 350mm for this lens, is that correct?

Set it to the actual FL if that is an available menu option. If 350 isn't on the list, set it to the closest number that is below 350.

Thanks again, I assumed that I should multiply the actual (35mm equivalent) focal length of 350mm to 525 or so, as the lens is effectively roughly 525mm with an APS-C sensor.

It is effectively a 525, but it is actually a 350. That's what the camera needs to know. I understand your reasoning and this isn't an uncommon mistake, but a 350mm lens is a 350mm lens, no matter what size sensor you put behind it.

Depends. 55B is probably the best image quality, followed by the tokina. Tokina will focus much, much closer though. (4 feet minimum focus distance). Tokina comes with a very nice hood, not sure about the 55B.

TamronSP 500mm 55b – look, no donuts

If you hate donuts, mirror lenses work well with subjects that are isolated or against a plain background. This pigeon was just over 30 feet (9.1metres) away.

Nice stuff kh, I quite like the doughnuts.

Some nice shots in your flickr link too, you seem to have got the focussing knack. I've found it to be ultra critical with my Tamron SP350, haven't quite got there yet.

You're bang on about the mirror lens hood/flare, they're rubbish without, luckily I've got one

Love the Manc scenes (You're not too far from me either).

That Minolta was a cool lens. Really nice shots! Looks very sharp.

Needless to say I've always liked Minolta. First SLR I ever had. Great innovators they were.

Autofocus, wireless flash, sensor IS... all Minolta.

I just joined the mirror club with a couple eBay purchases. Picked up a Soligor C/D 500 for $17 just to try it out. I figured that would be a low risk first cat to try but then watched another auction and nailed a Tamron 55BB for $100... that was a great price! It will be interesting to compare them.
