Picture 7 of 18 from Album Guatemala
Elegantly dressed woman with her child walking along a street in Totonicapan. All the streets in Totonicapan (pop. 500K) are narrow and crowded like this one. I was told that it was not a good idea to go out at night alone. Well, the adventure gave me a chance to see the contrast between the rough and the beautiful. When the Civil War ended in 1996, the Western democracies paid into what was called the "Peace Dividend." This provided money to rebuild infrastructure like highways, bridges and the electrical grid. Cities like Totonicapan got brick to pave their streets.
