If we are referring the the rear group of the middle section, it just unscrews with a spanner wrench. It's only a doublet, as I recall.
Remove the baffle plate from the rear to give yourself a wider opening to work with. You can get at the rear group of the middle section after removing the rearmost element.
It is fiddly this way, I grant you. i could clean everything, but not satisfactorily.
I knocked the entire lens down starting from the front. There is a grub screw near the focus ring that needs to be loosened, then the entire front half of the lens barrel will unscrew. Mine came apart relatively easily but I know of others that have resorted to a filter wrench to separate lens barrels.
You won't get the internal focus carrier out unless you knock down the entire lens from the back as well. This will mean taking down the mount, aperture lever, focus ring, etc, all out.
That's why I said "if you're brave".

Hi,
I read your review of the Tokina AT-X 400mm AF 5.6.
I have the same lens with the same problem you had...haze in the middle lens. All the other elements look good.
I removed the 3 grub screws from the rear group, but could not get it apart.
Can you please tell me how you did it?
Best
John
