Hello Charles,
Re: Your Takumar 1.4/50 (37902) SN 4334600 with an odd name.
I have just found a lens body (37902); the earliest so far (SN 4328961) with a Super-Takumar nameplate. It made me realise that this lens was the first standard Takumar to require a Super-multi-coated label. Maybe the correct nameplates were not available at the time? It does seem to support your idea of preproduction or early tooling up and the habit of not discarding parts if they could avoid doing so.
The next standard lens to receive the S-m-c name plate was (37101); a few in mid-production. This was managed after a sizeable gap in a seemingly irregular manner or as supplies were available according to the just in time system.
Stepping back it seems the 37902 got the correct new name first (eventually) and then the 37101 when there was an the over flow when production of new nameplates settled.
Thanks again for sharing your observations.
Cheers

Hi Chaz,
Your 4334600 is in place in a small batch of its own. This is a cut from my database.
It will be posted in Feb next year on the TFG site.
It is a copy left over from the first batch between two batches of the S-T 50. They ran out of correct nameplates and used up some mistakes they had left over i.e. your Multi-Coated one.
I wonder how many others are around ? They made parts in batches and often ran out of copies of parts and needed to wait for more to arrive especially early on before they had any stockpile or orders.
