FOLLOWUP: In Nevada, both Valley of Fire and Snow's Canyon are worth a visit. The eastern 2/3 of Nevada is really bleak country, not like the flat monotony of the Nullarbor Plain, it's up over rugged mountains, down through an uninhabited valley, another barren mountain range, another barren valley. Interstate 80 from Reno to Wendover and on to Salt Lake City is notoriously one of the emptiest stretches in the USA: almost completely devoid of rest stops, gas stations, hotels and restaurants mile, and mile.

Hi again:
I just checked with M - the meetings will be in BRISBANEt, We will tour before or after the meetings so we may be traveling close to you. I'll be able to share with you a cuppa or a Shirley Temple, or maybe a classic cocktail (mai tai, daiquiri) as I never drink beer or wine. We have friends in Australia from my undergraduate days who will want us to visit to take us to "their places." Hard to know how much time they will claim. In any case, a meeting and some time together is a must if the logistics are in any way reasonable.
Again, I hope your visit here "exceeds your expectations" to use a tired platitude. BTW: Have you been to THE STATES before? Of all the western states, the stretch across southern Utah has the best parks and scenery. In fact the whole of it is covered by scenery.

Forgot to mention. We will probably be in Australia late next year, about October. Scientific meetings in Sidney, I think, that M wants to attend. I'm going along for the scenery as I gave up on doing science decades back.

Just FYI: The book/guide on covered bridges in New England went off today to the hotel/casino. I included an unsealed box inside addressed back to me, so when you're done you can just pop it in, tape it shut, and mail it off.
Hoping your visit here is far better than you expect.
Sincerely,
Walter (AKA WPRESTO, when I'm pretending to be a photographer).
