My wife and I are older than her brother and retired. With 25 feet typical of annual snowfall at our Michigan home, we became snowbirds. Our RV stays in Texas. Her brother is self-employed as a land surveyor. No employees. Obviously he has no field work in the winter; rather he works PT catching up on delayed paperwork. Because he is working and we are retired, he feels put upon to be the 1st responder when we are in Texas. My wife does her best to avoid conflict with her brother and we are on that tether more than 6 months of the year. We know likely within a couple years, she will no longer be able to stay in her home and his primary argument will be moot. My wife would like to still have a brother in the future.

Family is important. It sounds like it is up to you to decide if you still want to have a brother and possibly a sister in a not impossibly distant future.

    Just my 2¢ worth.

We have been through something similar with my mother-in-law. I have to let you know that unless you are willing to undertake the responsibility, big talk, little action will just drive a wedge between you and your siblings. In our case my brother-in-law wants to control the decisions pertaining to his mother's care, but push the responsibility for action to his sister (my wife). My mother-in-law is still in her home, dementia but not a danger to herself, nearly deaf and cannot walk, and we have help coming into the house twice daily for several hours. Her kids are tethered to the area by their responsibility to be a first responder to to the LifeLine unit. The kids are also responsible for grocery shopping, laundry (she is frequently incontinent at night), and all medical appointments. <continued>

RE: snowbird, family issue, dementia... I couldn't in good conscience put this in the public view, even if most viewers are great pen pals.

Aside from the recent dementia, your mother seemed sharp enough over the to be self-sufficient and know what she was doing. My question (and the answer is yours, none of my business) is who are you more angry with your brother for his parasitic activity, or your mother for enabling it? Dementia changes the dynamic and the only way to deal with it is to take over her finances - either through a financial power of attorney while she is of sound enough mind to sign the document, or through a court-appointed conservatorship after that window has passed. Again, your question, not for me to know - Are you up to the challenge of pursuing this? And more so, are you up for the probable responsibility of managing her finances? And exercising tough love with the sibs? <continued>
