This is not the first time I have to deal with the embassy of Ghana (previously it was one in the UK), and it is clear that whoever devised the procedure for passport renewal, did not think things all the way through. For example, it did not occur to them that it is not possible to buy stamps on one country for use in another. I can use a courier (expensive, but...), or registered mail (much cheaper), but I have not found any way of purchasing a pre-paid envelope for either of these.

I tried to look up Colissimo, but my French is not good enough to determine if they offer what I need.

    Your help, again, is appreciated.

    Hi Serge,

Your first comment would not be acceptable (at least by the sender), because the passports must be returned by some secure means, e.g. registered mail or courier.

The two passports would weigh about 125 gms, so let's be safe and say the total package would be under 500 gms. Better safe than sorry. Also, rates for packages typically are not based on fine increments, as is the case for letters. I don't think I've seen a courier that has a separate price for something lighter than 1kg. Size, if required, I would guess would not exceed an A4 sheet, so let's say 30cmx20cmx1cm. More likely, though, there would be a "document envelope" that could be used if pre-purchased.

    Hi bxf,

I just went by the post office. For a regular <20g letter the simplest thing would be for me to buy an enveloppe and a 1€20 stamp and send them to you.

Passports, though? There is a service called Colissimo which is not exactly registered (as in signing on delivery) but is insured and pretty much safe. This would cost around 40€ for european destinations (I hadn't yet seen your pm - I'd assume 2 passports don't weigh all that much and should be about the same price).

If you could weigh the two passports (or one and multiply by two) I could get a definite quote on pricing.

You might want to ask the embassy regarding the choice between regular (letter) mail / Colissimo / international registered mail.

    Hi Serge,

Thanks for looking at my problem.

The "package" will consist of two passports (old and new), so we're not talking about anything big. Probably much less than 1 kilo (sorry for being vague), and will fit in a standard "document" envelope.

    I appreciate the effort.
