Elk Island National Park 2018
A very short trip to Elk Island National Park, September 25-27, 2018. Drove 620 Km 25th, stayed over two nights in my trailer, drove back home 27th. Elk Island National Park has two herds of bison, Plains Bison and Wood Bison. The Wood Bison area, South of Canada 16, was unfortunately closed while they work on the infrastructure. The bulk of my trip was in the main park area. | 4 | 2018-10-01 14:30

Albert's SMC Takumar 1:1.8 / 55 on Mother's Day
Just for fun I put the SMC Takumar 1:1.8 / 55 S/N 7922422 on the K-3 for the Mother's Day Drive. Images showing 400 mm were before I turned on Shake Reduction and set the focal length correctly. Last manual lens I used was the M 400. We drove from Sparwood, BC to Chinook Lake just over the Alberta border, but didn't get to the lake because the road was closed. I decided to take Claire to Beauvais Lake Provincial Park, 10 km West of Pincher Creek, and stopped at the Frank Slide highway pullout on the way for a few shots. Took some more snaps at Beauvais Lake. The day taught me that I must remember to use the Man/Auto switch properly and focus more carefully. I would have thought I could have done better, since I started out with a Takumar 55 mm f/2.2 preset, and used it for some 20+ years, but I guess not. It also showed me that the SMC Tak is not particularly prone to CA nor to PF when used at f/8. The images were taken directly from the Raw card, with the odd exposure modification. | 5 | 2018-05-13 19:07

K3 and DA 55-300
11 Oct 2015 my wife and I went for a Sunday drive and I took the new-to-me K3 with my DA 55-300 just to see what the combination could do. Most of the photos were taken with the K3 in Green Mode. I wanted to see what Mr. Pentax thought of things. The K3 was set to put PEF on Card 1 and JPG on Card 2 so I could compare the camera JPG engine to what I could do in Lightroom 6.2. It turns out that for most shots, the camera JPG engine was plenty good enough, except for some tricky lighting situations with very high contrast. I could pick up a bit more detail in Lightroom due to the 14 bit wiggle room.

Easter Sunday, 2015, in Creston Wildlife Management Area
This is one of our favourite places to visit, and we went for a drive Sunday. I used one lens, the DA 55-300 all day. We thought there were not likely to be very many birds, so I didn't take the 400 with me, just my DA kit of three lenses, and never changed a lens. All of the photos except the Pentaxian attempting to capture Bald Headed Eagles in flight are at 300 mm. | 7 | 2015-04-07 09:50

Coal Trains in the Elk Valley
Taken with my DA-L 55-300 at 55 mm. Our trains run 132 cars or so of clean coal. The coal is shipped out from the port near Vancouver BC, and is mostly used to make steel. The album cover is the head of the train, the other is the middle engine, half way back.
