Short answer, yes. My Nikon is like this and has been sine 1982!
Why? It's the shallow DOF. It's an unavoidable optical issue. Some designs, like the $2,000 Leica's control it more, but not affordably, and not in AF lenses.
This is why clean, high ISO is the Holy Grail. Fast glass has tradeoffs. Always has, always will.
