Yes, I've seen the sunrise on Haleakala and it is stunning. But it was a tough sell for my student group to wake at 3:00 to depart for the summit in the dark of the early morning, and then the freezing cold of the dawn. It also exhausted everyone for the rest of the day. Of course once the sun rises, it's worth it, but the sunset was a better experience as we could enjoy the drive up, saw a Brocken Spectre, and then the summit wasn't quite as cold and everyone slept really well that night.
