    Hi again Bill,

I agree size and weight should not be an issue.
I have looked up the info concerning Colissimo International (better than the hostess at the post office) and it turns out that not only is it tracked, but also has the benefit of signature-required delivery. And if I'm not mistaken it can be bought pre-paid (to be stuck on an enveloppe of your choice). I could send it along to you for you to include it in your correspondance with the embassy. Not quite the same thing as registered mail, but quite secure, I'd say. From what I gather on the post's website: 12,30€

There is also Chrono Express prepaid bubbled enveloppes, which they describe as being specifically for sending documents (and supposedly faster than Colissimo): 49€ (270mm x 335mm) or 52€ (240mm x 285mm).

The question is: will the embassy be ok with one of these? I'd ask them directly.

I can see no solution to pre-paying "real" registered mail, though...

    ...

This is not the first time I have to deal with the embassy of Ghana (previously it was one in the UK), and it is clear that whoever devised the procedure for passport renewal, did not think things all the way through. For example, it did not occur to them that it is not possible to buy stamps on one country for use in another. I can use a courier (expensive, but...), or registered mail (much cheaper), but I have not found any way of purchasing a pre-paid envelope for either of these.

I tried to look up Colissimo, but my French is not good enough to determine if they offer what I need.

    Your help, again, is appreciated.

    Bill

(Message too long, so split into two)

    Hi Serge,

Your first comment would not be acceptable (at least by the sender), because the passports must be returned by some secure means, e.g. registered mail or courier.

The two passports would weigh about 125 gms, so let's be safe and say the total package would be under 500 gms. Better safe than sorry. Also, rates for packages typically are not based on fine increments, as is the case for letters. I don't think I've seen a courier that has a separate price for something lighter than 1kg. Size, if required, I would guess would not exceed an A4 sheet, so let's say 30cmx20cmx1cm. More likely, though, there would be a "document envelope" that could be used if pre-purchased.

    Hi Serge,

Thanks for looking at my problem.

The "package" will consist of two passports (old and new), so we're not talking about anything big. Probably much less than 1 kilo (sorry for being vague), and will fit in a standard "document" envelope.

    I appreciate the effort.
