I hear that you sometimes have to give those apes an apple to keep them from stealing your camera!

If they smell one (or anything else edible), they'll go after it without asking permission!

Orange Rose - The color of autumn

Pulled out my clean K10D to give it the once in while shutter workout. Taken with my K24mm 3.5 lens. F8 1/125, iso 100. Deep contrast and explosive vivid colors. Its a shock since I always am using my K20D.

Would anyone happen to have a low light ISO 800 & ISO 1600 PEF or DNG RAW sample that I can get?

I'm probably going to pick up a K10D this weekend. Thanks!

Be forewarned. As much as I love my K10D, ISO 1600, especially in low light, is just about unusable. Above 400, the noise begins to be noticeable. The higher you go, the worse it gets.

I never use 1600 and seldom use 800.

That is one of the few things I would change about my K10D. Other than that, it is a fabulous camera.

If you do go for the used K10D, remember that you can get an accurate shutter count from the exif data of any image. Pentax defaults to using a sequential number in the file names of the images, but that can be reset, so the file name may not be a completely trustworthy number. The count in the exif data can not be reset, other than by replacing the motherboard.

There are several tools to display exif data from images. Just download one of them, take a picture, put the SD card in your computer and take a look.

I'm going to be lending this treasured camera to my non-photographer parents for a cruise this month, so I'm working on finding a good setup for straight-from-the-camera jpegs with full auto-focus and auto-exposure with the kit zoom. Here's a couple of first attempts with no post-processing, using the "Natural" option with Saturation +1, Sharpness +2, and Contrast +1. It would be great to know what settings anyone else uses when/if taking the straight-from-the-camera route.

Mine would be similar to that, Dave. If they were using a prime, I'd probably do only +1 on sharpness, contrast and saturation. If it was a zoom (except for the DA 16-45) I'd use +2 on those, I think.

Thanks. They'll be cruising the Mediterranean and North Africa on the Queen Victoria, so I really need a good sunny day here to try to get an idea of how the camera's jpeg engine handles bright sunlight. I have got a 16-45mm but I don't want to risk it in my dad's hands, whereas I think of the 18-55mm as pretty much disposable (wishing now that I'd kept the WR version). And I think you're probably right about going to +2 on everything with the kit zoom.

I'd really like to keep the camera set to jpeg only, because I don't want to have to process hundreds of raw files, but I expect I'll end up using raw+ to give me a chance of fixing up any shots that the camera (and user) gets badly wrong. I'm thinking of it as an excuse to buy a new, fast, high capacity SD card that I can use myself in the future.

Definitely a good excuse to get that SD card, Dave. You won't regret having it.

I really want a k10d for the CCD sensor, can't really justify spending the prices on ebay for one though when my k-01 is still working like a champ.

Yes, prices can vary wildly on eBay. With a little patience and luck, you can pick one up very reasonably. The one I picked up a couple of months ago is hands down my best camera buy to date.

If you're going to shoot jpegs with the K10D be sure to turn on the shadow and highlight blinkies. To get the most detail expose as far to the right as possible without getting any highlight blinkies. Just my $0.02.

Do I look up "blinkies" in the manual's index to learn how to do that?
