Photo of the Week #127, August 15 - August 29, 2010
Posted By: stevebrot, 08-22-2010, 05:17 PM

Welcome to the 127th edition of the Pentax Forum's Picture of the Week!
This edition covers photos taken between August 15th and August 29nd, 2010, or shots from last week you haven't processed until now.

Thanks to woof for hosting last week and thanks for choosing me as the host.

POTW is a great place to show what you're shooting day-to-day with your cameras. It gives us all a chance to see what other members are up to with their Pentax cameras in their parts of the world in which they live or have visited. We can share ideas and hopefully learn from one another which is great too!

So show us what you've seen in your little corner of the planet! I look forward to seeing all of what's out there this week.

Again same rules as before:

1) No theme, just post your favorite pix.

2) Let's keep it to under 6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.

3) Any Pentax camera or Samsung SLR is fine, whether it's film, P&S, or DSLR.

4) Date: Sunday August 15 to Sunday August 29 2010. Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes. Old shots with a new look from post-processing during the open time period are also welcome.

5) The current host will appoint the new host as an invitation via PM. If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact Peter Zack, Moderator via PM.

Previous hosts: Each one is a hotlink to that POTW thread to look past at the previous 117 weeks. 1 Peter Zack, 2Eaglerapids 3 rmtagg, 4 Peter Zack, 5 daacon, 6 Bramela, 7 mtnbearhug, 8 dantuyhoa, 9 gawan,10 roentarre, 11 daacon, 12 Kris, 13 mtnbearhug, 14 SCGushue, 15 daacon, 16 maxwell1295, 17 dantuyhoa, 18 daacon, 19 maxwell1295 19(2) daacon, 20 Bramela, 21 Syb, 22 maxwell1295, 23 maxwell1295, 24 dantuyhoa, 25 Gawan, 26 Peter Zack, 27 borno, 28 daacon, 29 gawan, 30 Damn Brit, 31 maxwell1295 32 maxwell1295 , 33 dantuyhoa, 34 daacon, 35 Peter Zack, 36 Damn Brit, 37 Borno, 38 Kevint, 39 Peter Zack, 40 Timbo13, 41 daacon, 42 daacon, 43 gawan, 44 dantuyhoa, 45 daacon, 46 Rense, 47 daacon, 48 Rense, 49 borno, 50 Rense, 51 daacon, 52 Peter Zack, 53 Peter Zack, 54 dadipentax, 55 David Whiteley, 56 planedriver, 57 daacon,58 Bramela, 59 daacon, 60 gawan, 61 virgilr, 62 daacon, 63 RickL, 64 Peter Zack, 65 Peter Zack, 66 Causey 67 daacon, 68 Bramela, 69 georgeweb, 70 daacon, 71 seacapt, 72 daacon, 73 AOski, 74 Rense 75 eccs19, 76 daacon, 77 xs400, 78 daacon, 79 Bramela, 80 borno, 81 legacyb4, 82 daacon, 83 gawan, 84 Rense, 85 Peter Zack, 86 davef, 87 davef, 88 xjjohnno 89 Bramela , 90 Peter Zack, 91 daacon, 92 stevebrot ,93 reeftool, 94 jezza323, 95 oldschool, 96 Iris, 97 Rense, 98 planedriver, 99 xs400, 100 Peter Zack, 101 Netuser 102 Photolady, 103 Tamia, 104 Irishwhite, 105 Ramseybuckeye, 106 xjjohnno, 107 Bumbibop, 108 JeffJS, 109 Tpeace, 110 Nomad, 111 Photolady, 112 rparmar, 113 Peter Zack, 114 casil403, 115 Tamia 116 JeffJS, 117 bbluesman, 118 Clou, 119 ruggiex, 120 Jimbow007, 121 jmschrie, 122 VaughnA 123 pop4, 124 casil403, 125 woof, 126 twitch

These late summer flowers in my backyard are some of my favorites. Thank you IS050 for use of the SP 35-80...excellent lens.

Thanks for hosting Steve.

Couple from today.

Tried to get a good shot of a yellow flower. They are hard to get right. I think it turned out good.

Also tried like crazy to get a bee in flight today. This was the best of the bunch.

Hi Steve, thanks for hosting. I got a few I took Friday and yesterday that I was saving for this week's POTW.

First what I call a Thunderhead:

Clouded Sulphur:

Indian Paint Daisy:

Ginger Flower. I did know exactly which ginger flower but can't recall now:

Horse's head: I had to keep backing up cause he tried to lick my lens.

Here is a shot from my series Torc Waterfall. I have four others there to check out.

Looks like we are off to a good start!

@eccs19...Yes, yellow is difficult, but it looks like you are doing a good job with it

Mar...I really like the butterfly, but particularly the horse!

Robin...The waterfall is an incredibly beautiful image. Good work!

Hmmmm...wasn't it Hinman that had a post of the lens forum regarding lens licking? Sounds like a new Internet meme to me

I tried a different technique yesterday for high speed capture: Rather than fumbling around in the dark and trying to time a strobe flash to the event, this time I experimented with both the K20's burst mode (20 fps) and the K7 video (30 fps). Certainly made puncturing the balloon much easier since I could see what I was doing!

I also added some food coloring to the water in the balloon just on a whim. Think this turned out pretty well.

Balloon #1: (Yellow balloon, Blue water
-----------------------------------------------------
K20 burst mode:

K7 video jpeg extract:

Balloon #2: (Blue balloon, Red water
-----------------------------------------------------
K20 burst mode:

(This is about as close as I've ever come to capturing the balloon skin in the act of actually ripping open.)

K7 video jpeg extract:

I was surprised how much color interacting between the balloon and the water showed up on the K20 shots. (I think this didn't show up on the K7 shots since I keep the JPEG color setting on muted to reduce color noise.)

The only draw back to the K7 is that there is very little control over the ISO and shutter speed settings. For that reason, I think I prefer the K20.

Regards,
-t

Thanks for hosting Steve! I have not been out with my camera much lately, the weather has lousy and I was ill, but I did get some shots in when picking my son up from work over the weekend. Flowers, but then one must take advantage of natural colour while we have it in these parts. The yellow flowers are part of a massive display at a funeral home which has a stunning garden.

Oh, and Photolady, I love the horse photo!

Thanks for hosting Steve. I love asters, too, and they're still hanging tight up here.

eccs19, congratulations on capturing that bee in flight. I can hardly get them when they're perched.

Mar, great series. I especially love the horse, the ginger flower's texture, and the clouded sulfur. That thunderhead is impressive, too.

Robin, among my favorites, your waterfall shots.

Clou, impressive shots as always. I've never seen a puffball with that particular pattern on its surface.

Tpeace, you continue to astound with those exploding balloons. The color "blending" really is a surprise.

Joe, beautiful colors and texture on those flowers.

Mark, beautiful series. I particularly like Hipstamaticroid. Well done.

I've got a mixed bag of shots so far...

Buried Line?

Two Barks

Spent Summer

Stars

Spider Shadow

Tamia - Your "Two Barks" shot is very interesting. It has my eyes debating each other regarding which tree is in the foreground. Reminds me of a recent issue of Scientific American which was dedicated to the brain science behind optical illusions. I've been thinking about how to incorporate some of this into photography. Appears you've found a way. Very nice effect!

Tamia, good "Stars " shot -- those are harder to shoot than they appear (from experience).

@clou -- Great shots from the Bavarian Alps! Liked the puffball too.

@tpeace -- The return of the bursting balloons! Great series! Smiles all around

Joe -- Good work on the funeral home flowers. The yellow ones are particularly nice.

Mark -- I had to look up Hipstamaticroid and with some effort figured it out. Great work with the phone cam! ("Hipstamatic" + "Droid"). The next three non-phone shots are really outstanding in my opinion...great work.

Tamia -- Love the implications of the "buried line" tape . The "Stars" shot is my fave though.
