The moon is full tonight (March 19, 2011) in the northern hemisphere and closer to Earth than it has been in a long time - it appears about 15% larger than when it is furthest away.

Here is a shot from Denmark at 10:14 pm, K20D, FA*400. It was a clear night, just a little bit of haze.

No postprocessing other than crop and resize, and levels.

Mine was early AM as it was to be and is cloudy tonight.

And Jupiter was pasted in next to the moon as I shot it then as well.

Here's mine. Not as crisp as I'd like and no competition for the ones you all took, but there was some haze. PP included only a crop and slight reduction in size, and a tweak to levels.

looks like the weather here has put any moon shooting out for tonight, thick cloud cover perhaps tomorrow will be better but the moon won't be quite as "super"!

I realllllllllly wish I had my 300/2.8 on me as the shots would be killer...but all I had was the 80-200mm zoom. Here's what I managed to squeeze out of it:

I set out just at dusk and happened to arrive at the spot just as the moon was rising. Yes, it was really this orange.

The above 3 photos were taken at a location along the Detroit river I frequent a lot, especially when I get a new lens. There were Several people there with all manner of cameras. Some with small credit card sized point and shoots (on tripods), cell phone cameras, and of course, SLRs. One lady who said she forgot her tripod was for some reason using a flash. I can assume she was using a camera that in that lighting condition forces the flash automatically. It could also be she wanted to light up the foreground. Either way, I assume she got what she was after. There was even a guy there who arrived at the same time as me, got his camera all ready to shoot. The next thing I hear is "(explative) I forgot my CF card! Damn, and that's the angle I wanted.".. I don't know what Nikon uses but I know Canon uses CF so I can only assume that's what he had. There is a Reason I rely on the USB cable to transfer my photos. I've been in his spot before but never with anything I couldn't go back to at a later date.

I would like to note that if it weren't for this forum, I would not have had any idea that this special lunar event was going to take place.

Took this one last night since tonight haze and clouds are working against me...ISO 100 F9.5 1/30 sec on a Sigma 70-200 v2 HSM with the Sigma 1.4x Tele Converter D300s handheld. Cropped and sharpened a bit

I was so shocked that for once there were no clouds or rain that I just had to give this Moon thing a try. That is a street lamp in the foreground.

For once an astronomical event visible to the human eye lived-up to its hype...

Since I left my tripod in my NYC apartment a few months back, I had to find something to serve as a platform at my home on LI. I ended-up using the banister of my stairs to my deck. Angle and positioning was perfect. Tho I had to wait until after midnight until that could be the case. Not in the same class as many of you fine folks (great work, everybody!), but here's my contribution:



Probably doesn't meet Ole's requirements, so I hope that's OK. My shot's a composite of 55 frames shot at 12:15AM Eastern, with a K-5, 60-250, and Tamron 1.4x TC. As well as stacking and averaging in Photoshop CS5, I also tweaked color, levels, and sharpened, but no other PP.

Holy cow. So it is that! I took a look at this marvelously sharp image in largest form on Flikr then noticed that object in the upper left. And thought, "is that Saturn? no, it couldn't be" (well, Jupiter, ok ; not Saturn? seems like I see major rings tho) Glad to learn it is indeed one of the gas giants.

JeffJS, your last photo looks really magical!

Here's my contribution. I stood outside and was really amazade when the moon rose, didn't expect it to be so large. I've been out every clear night during the last week, but this was something really special!
Tamron AF 70-300, a bit cropped and desaturated. Sharpness on the moon is non existing.

400mm lens and 400mm lens with 2x teleconverter, cropped to roughly the same size. I should have used 2 tripods as I was having vibration issues even with a remote and mirror lockup.
