Weekly Challenge # 38 - At the Zoo
Posted By: atupdate, 11-22-2007, 05:32 AM

We were hoping to take the kids to the zoo this weekend but a cold front is on its way. So I'm asking you to share your favorite zoo shot.

Contest closes on Thursday Nov 29th at Midnight from where ever you live. I’ll post the winner(s) on Friday.

The rules:
1. Post ONE photo (max 800x800) as a response to THIS post.
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme. It can be colour or B&W, your choice.
3. You can offer as much or as little additional information as you wish, but I'd be interested to know the location/event/whatever being depicted.
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and chose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. The challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any camera will do but it must be a Pentax. Just use any camera you want. No discriminating anyone as long as the shooter is an active member here.

Previous Challenge Subjects:
1-Statues, 2-Wheels, 3-Speed, 4-Peace, 5-Survival, 6-Macro, 7-Mountains, 8-Children, 9-Post Processing, 10- Windows & Doors, 11-Sport, 12-Urban Landscape, 13-Wisdom, 14-Power, 15-Music, 16-Pathways, 17-Lines, 18-Storm, 19-Boats, 20-Water, 21 - Golden Hour, 22 - Natural Lighting, Portraits, 23- Motion Blur, 24-Simplicity, 25-Color, 26-Cars, 27-Repetition, 28-Wildlife, 29-Epiphany, 30-Contrast, 31-Pets, 32-Landscapes, 33-Coastal, 34-Churches, 35-Bridges, 36-Creation, 37-Still LIfe: Food

this was taken at our company picnic at the zoo. handler was holding a small screech owl, which i shot with k100d and DA 50-200. in the frame the owl was still small from the distance. this is an extreme crop, approx 1/5 of the total frame. i could tell there was a reflection in the eye, but not what until i greatly enlarged. i guess the (be)holder is in the eye of the beauty.....

I'm sure that's a rash......

This is a shot that a lot of moms can probably relate to:

Lets see, by [my?] loose definition a Zoo is a place fenced/walled-in, that you pay to enter, containing animals of all kinds there for your viewing pleasure. By that definition then, I guess I can include pics taken in the zoo of the Serengeti.

They don't take as good care of their animals there as animals I see pictures of from other zoos... where the animals here get into tussles often to varying degrees of seriousness, as can be surmised from the far less then pristine snoot of this subject. As you would notice even moreso if you were to compare this big old feline to the way other zoos maintain their feline residents.... (I suspect you will see some pristine subjects of that type posted here by someone exemplifying what I'm talking about)

(edit: click the image if you'd like to see the series)

As was explained to us by our trusty Driver / Sherpa / Guide / Protector & Retail Agent, this is an old ex-King of the jungle. He was kicked out of his pride by strong young male lions. Found laying @ the roadside licking his wounds, of which there were many more then seen here! Probably won't be able to hunt for himself, and now being Lioness-less, will probably soon starve. One instance of the irony woven into the laws of the jungle in its rawest form... not on display in your typical [ahem ] zoo that you may visit.

This is from Vegas. I cant remember which hotel it was at. There were a bunch of large cats and some dolphins too. Sort of like a mini zoo.

Not a Zoo per-se, but it was a wildlife education center.

The reflection in the cornea is absolutely wild. Really cool. It's clearly not the photographer. Is that the person the Owl is looking at?

I think I'll call this one "Caged cat"

Taken in the spring at the Boston Zoo. I think seeing the fence in front of the animal really screams out "ZOO".
