How to install the PPL Upgrade when you don't have the orginal disk or PPL installed
Posted By: Russell-Evans, 09-14-2008, 04:32 AM

You'll need a blank CD and CD writing program.

You need to create a CD and label it S-SW55. The disk can have anything you want on it. PPL 3.51 will ask for the disk and once your S-SW55 disk is inserted, it will continue on with the install.

Thank you
Russell

Installing on a netbook without a CD/DVD drive

You will need the following two tools, Deamontools lite and CDburnXP.
Home page :: DAEMON-Tools.cc
CDBurnerXP: Introduction and News

In CDBurnxp, open a data disk. Click on the "Disc" in the left lower panel and rename to S-SW90. In the file menu, select "Save compilation as ISO". Save the ISO to your desktop, it should save as S-SW90.iso.

After installing deamontools lite, you'll find deamontools running in your systems tray (right hand corner with the clock). Click on the deamontools icon (blue circle with lightening bolt) in the task window to see Device 0 (your virtual DVD), click on Device 0 to open the "Select Image File" dialog box. Click on the Desktop Icon on the left, now click on the S-SW90.iso file to mount it.

You should now be able to install the 4.11 update.

Thank you
Russell

Another method for installing is by just renaming a SD card in a reader with S-SW90. You be prompted for the CD, just click OK and install will proceed.

Thank you

You can also just rename a flash drive (thumb drive). After the install just rename it back to what it was before.

Worked great for me.

Much thanks to the previous contributors. It gave me the idea to try it this way.

Didn't work. Suggestions

I'm new here, found the site trying to get a copy of PDC Utility 4. I have 2 K-x's and I didn't get a cd with the second one and have no idea if or where the first one is located. I labeled a cd and got by the first step but then it says "Cannot to (sic) find old version that is valid target of upgrading.Installation (sic) is canceled." I named a folder in the drive but it still didn't work. What file is it looking for? Anyone know?

As I recall The install error message says what label it is looking for. I believe 4.0 looks for the volume label "S-SW90". Any removable drive labeled so will satisfy the installation program so you can use a memory card or USB drive or memory stick. Just change the volume label.

Yes, the volume label is S-SW140.

Thank you blende8, I did it and now I can use DCU 5.3.1 for a better support of Pentax recent lenses, such as my DA 21 f3.2 limited.
My K30 didnt come with DCU5 nor any earlier version of DCU, but with Silkypix developer studio 3, which is not updated anymore and thus is now obsolete and doesnt provide support for these new lenses.
And DCU 5 is a huge improvemant on Developer Studio 3.

It appears on Window 8.1 and Windows 10 when you run the update for DCU 5.5.1 it will complain it cannot find the CD but then allows you to install it by clicking OK - Next - Next - Install.
