Automatically take photos

I am a keen cyclist and have recently picked up a K10D.

One question which searches on this forum and google have not been able to answer is:

Is is possible for a K10D to automatically take a series of pictures when an object (me) passes the lens? If not, then presumably the next best option is a wireless remote or a even a photographer?!

I recall a discussion a little while ago using catch-in-focus mode for this sort of thing.
My K200D has it...

In the menus set Catch in Focus to ON
Set AF to AF.S
A manual lens or lenses with a manual setting on the lens set to Manual mode on the lens
Camera must be in AF mode
Adjust the focus to where the subject will be
Fully release the shutter and when the subject comes into focus the shutter fires

I'm not sure how many pictures you can fire off like this - perhaps if the camera is set to Continuous Shooting (Hi) you can fire off 4 frames (not sure what the K10D does in burst mode)

Guess the only way is to try it.....

The K10D doesn't have a "Catch in focus" option, but if you use manual focus lens it will work as if the option was there.

@Flyer - I have a MF lens so that shouldn't be a problem, I'm a bit confused as to how it is set up on the K10D though if you say it isn't an option..

Also, once set up does the shutter button need to be held down?

Ideally, I want to set up the camera on a tri-pod on a jump/ section of track, hike up, and ride down with a burst of photos taken when I come into view (focus)...

The best solution to that would be an universal wired remote (cheap from ebay) and a buddy holding that remote

It's real easy to do - just put camera on AF and the camera will only take pictures when the center is in focus (assuming you are not using AF button on the back of the camera as the only autofocus button).
While it's easy, I don't know how viable this solution is since you have to be perfectly in focus every time you ride through the frame. Also, it will start firing only when you reach the center of the frame.

That's what I was thinking, however you shouldn't need a friend there. Just measure the signal distance, and focus on the distance. If you hold (clip) the button down it should trip the camera the moment you are in range.

It's not an *option* because it's always enabled.

Between the fact that I suspect you *do* have to hold the shutter down and the fact that response may not be instant, I'd give this a pretty low likelihood of actually working well, I have to say. I think you're going to get better results with less effort by simply asking someone to fire the burst for you, for that application. I could be wrong, though.
