K-5 ISO 6400 developed

I downloaded Falconeye raw iso 6400 shot and developed with Raw Therapee and than denoised with Noise Ninja.
Absolutely no NR and no sharpening was applied, also no corrections were made on the white balance, so it looks different color than Falconeye's.

I really do not like the way LR smudges everything, it makes images look as if they were taken with a little PS camera.

Looking at the LR developed image I was really not impressed by the 6400 output, now I am!

Please download the full size samples without NR and without any sharpening here:
ISO 6400 no NR

Here is the NR and sharpened version:
ISO 6400 with NR
Look at that beautiful grain.

What do you think?

Here you can download the original DNG and play by yourself!

I think come January or so, somebody here is going to get a moderately used K7. Or at least I'm that much closer to that decision than I was yesterday.

As to your samples, Nice retention on the edges but I still see a lot of color noise in the darker areas. Certainly not what I expected at 6400 though, even in the original.

I have a K10D that I am not sure anyone will want by the time the K-5 is shipping. I wouldn't even know what to ask for it in USD.

I prefer the "no NR" for the reds and the "NR" for the blacks....

It took me not more than 2 minutes to do the developing and the NR, so don't expect it to be the best that can be done. It was only to show a different kind of processing than that of LR3.
I don't like flat looking images, I much prefer the tiny grain that RT delivers, and then apply mostly chroma NR. This way it looks great when printed (that should be the purpose of a DSLR), while it might not be the best for web viewing.

Well if you cannot sell it I would happily pay for shipping to my house!

I feel it's still miles away from the ageing D700

It is also a crop sensor cam unlike the D700.

Gotta say, looks impressive for 6400.

You must be talking about LR 2. The IQ from LR 3 is excellent.

BTW, the original RAW file was attached to this post. The respective thread contains more conversion samples.

At ISO 6400 ? No, it looks better than the K-X, but need to see more real-world shots.

Thanks to you and of course falconeye for sharing this little gem

I found the file responded very well to ACR/Denoise 5 which seems to hold a healthy advantage over the K-x insofar as noise and detail goes in this scene.

I also suspect a little more time with the system should allow for slightly improved output output as we would get better acquainted with in camera settings and the sensor characteristics.

Having said all that... anyone have an ISO12800 laying around

K-5, ISO6400, ACR6, TDN5, 1280x848 sample, JPG IQ: 80%

2MB full size image: Download

~ the end...

Thanks, but why bother showing us what you can do with noise reduction? We'd buy canon if we wanted smudgy crap with no detail :P

From my perspective, when it comes to RAW processing, it really comes down to what can be extracted from the file. In this case, though SN is accountable, the sample contains a great deal of detail which translates to better file handling at the NR level of things in contrast to previous models.

Additionally, on contrast to other a-typical files, this sample shows little(if any) loss of detail in the red and blue channels which is very promising at this level of things.

Interestingly enough, this early sample is proving to be very close to an ISO6400 D700 file in terms of detail retention. In fact, I'd go as far as saying that if we expect file quality to improve with later FW and a better understanding of the new sensor, then it may very well match or exceed a FF file.

Which I personally find to be very exciting.
