Ok, I know everyone is probably sick of all the high-ISO shots of my wife and kids so I promise this will be the last one for a while

Quick shot I just took a few minutes ago, intentionally similar to the one from the other day. I just used LR3 and the only noise reduction I did was 12 Luminescence and 36 on Color. Again, this wasn't run through Denoise or anything and was basically a 30 second conversion from RAW to JPG. I'm sure John could take this to another level with his technique, but he's sleeping now, so I was on my own

Doesnt matter DG, post as many as you like of which ever subject you choose, as this is about performance

I'd be extremely happpy if had that K5 in my hands

Actually, John & your efforts are greatly appreciated, I'm sure anyone who's "tired" of seeing these can click on other sections of the forum.

What I would like to see, though... maybe some ISO 1000 ---> 3200 snaps in low light, not test chart shots, just casual snaps, NO NR at all.

I shoot my D700 a lot in this range, and the IQ is brilliant without NR - I'd be overjoyed if my next aps-c camera could do something close to that in that ISO range.

(Maybe get some sleep now, though.)

I will certainly start posting some 1000-3200 shots. I actually did shoot a bunch in that range the other day (before I went on the high ISO kick) and the IQ/lack of noise seemed very impressive. 1600 and 3200 are pretty clean and even 6400 isn't terrible without NR (IMO).

Had a play again, running through Topaz and NN and a tweak here i and there. A slight softness creeping in i think, which might be inevitable, given the subject matter

You can download the original RAW file here if you want to play around with it. You'll probably get better results if you start from the original

Thanks for all the samples. I am just getting started with processing my RAW files after playing with the buttons a couple days to get that out of my system. Even with the latest version of ACR I cannot process PEF, only DNG. Is that your experience also? Just making sure I didn't screw up installing ACR 6.2 tonight.

I never bought a leading edge camera before the K-5 so producing files that Adobe can't read yet is new to me. If it's DNG until ACR 6.3 thats ok.

I think the raw output (not with the software NR) is better.

Boost up the contrast and you'll have passable film-like noise.

Thanks to all of you (you bastards) I just ordered a K5. It better be as good as you make it seem or there'll be hell to pay!!

Normally its a couple of months before the major software vendors have a PEF profile ready, since PEF profile is camera-specific. Pentax is often not a priority

K-5 is very capable camera indeed. I will be looking forward to playing with its RAW files in LR when the version that supports it comes out. Not implying here that I am going to buy it though.

dagaies - this is phenomenal. 1/40s at 51200 ---wow, probably the slowest shutter speed you can practically use for human subjects...This is still usable, WITHOUT a custom denoise software.

I have taken pics at 25600 on k-x, mostly at dimly lit restaurants. This is clearly more than a stop better at that range.
