HDR images

Obviously I don't know a lot about anything here, but I would really like to know the "best" way to take and process an HDR image. Does everyone just use your bracketing mode on the camera? Is there a setting to increase the stops for the bracketing (K10D)? And then, how do you merge the pictures properly if you are using Adobe Photoshop or Gimp? Thanks for any information you could give me!
