Don't forget the little sibling, the K200D

I hope that all the excitement about the K20D will not push the K200D into the darkness!

From the Pentax press release I gather that the K200D has a lot of the important features at a much lower price point and will be a great camera on its own:

Weather resistant body
Shake reduction with a 2.5 to 4 stop compensation
Big 2.7 inch, 230,000 dot LCD
Custom image function allowing fine tuning of a lot of image parameters
Advanced dust removal system
Battery grip available
Runs on AA batteries which are widely available. No need to go scout for that power outlet in the middle of nowhere
1100 (wow) images per set of batteries
RAW button
In-body RAW file development
10MP, more than adequate for most situations
Scene modes, handy for beginners
Compact, light but still sturdy

The full data sheet is available with the Pentax press release:

Actually the K200D interests me more than the K20D as an upgrade from my DS as its more compact size suits my travel needs better....and I do like the AA's.

Cheers

Agreed. I don't plan on upgrading my K100D to a K200D, because I can't do a one-generation jump. If I get any new camera in the next year or so, it'll probably be a K20D.

But if I had an older DSLR, or none at all, the K200D would be ridiculously attractive. It has so many great features that it's bound to make a huge splash at the lower end of the DSLR market. If only I had waited 6 months to pull the trigger on an SLR =)

Is pentax going to keep around the K100D at all? With the list price of the K200D higher than the K10D, it seems like they are abandoning the entry level market.

I am looking at K200D too, over K10D. Waiting for the camera to hit the shops.

I believe K100DS will stay.
So we will see K20D, K200D, and K100DS in shops.

Hard to belive the K200D paltry 4 frame buffer though.

Guys, are you kidding? K200D over K10D?! May I hear your reasoning?

K10D and K200D share the same sensor and circuitry and very likely the same image quality. The same AF system, though K200D will be slower to focus because of less battery power. K10D have much better body. K10D is cheaper. Why would you choose K200D instead of K10D?!

No, not kidding ...if the price of the K10 & K200 are close then I would opt for the K200simply for the AA's.

Focus speed not much of an issue for me, but portability is.
Cheers.

Why? I appears the K200D < K10D...

Functionally looks about the same as K10D except that it has "scene modes" (btw, do people acutally use those?) and take AA batteries. But its still lesser since in has a pent-mirror viewfinder, not pentaprism and only 4 frame buffer... I can't imagine it being a better value over the current prices on the K10D upon its release.

Hopefully by the time it is available the actual price will be a little better than the currently projected price of $699 (body only). Some reasons to consider it include:

*Improved Shake reduction system
*New Image processing pipeline
*Customizable Image Modes and White Balance
*Adjustable Noise reduction (off, weakest, weak, strong)
*Improved in camera processing
*Improved Digital Preview (can save the preview if desired)
*New Dust Alert
*2.7 inch LCD with 160 deg viewing angle
*Enlarged and improved menus
*Dynamic Range Enlargement
*AF adjustment for up to 20 lenses (still needs to be confirmed)
*AA batteries with available AA powered Grip
*Slightly less weight and bulk
*Presumably more digital filters available

Haven't decided yet whether or not these advantages out weigh the features that are omitted that the K10D has.

I have to agree, the specs are great untill the buffer.
Pentax keeps doing this, does memory really cost that much to have to keep it to such a small number??? come on these are 2001 specs not 2008.
Other than that I love the camera, may get one to for the AA support

Personally, I don't use them. But they're very handy to have when I want to pass the camera to my wife or kids. They know nothing about cameras and don't care to learn. Having the scene modes gives me the option of allowing them to use the camera as a glorified point-n-shoot. Those of us who perhaps for family finances reasons chose the K100D because we lacked the bucks for the K10D probably similarly lack the funds to buy a digital P&S for occasional use by other members of the family. The presence of the scene modes give us the option of having a great DSLR and a great "family camera" all wrapped up in one.
