Putting aside the Photoshoppery (?) of the mockup, this reminds me how every so often a thread on various forums calls out for a stripped down, bare bones DSLR aimed at students. Something that would force those learning photography to consider exposure, reading from a spot meter, for example. This Spotmatic D has a lot more buttons than that idea would need, but oh, how pretty it is!

What do you mean, "aimed at students"?

Aimed at me!

This camera is just what I would like - only, why not make the screen even larger?

Nice photoshop job - problem I see is with the "Photo-Video-Off" button, you have to slide it through the video setting to take a picture, not very practical. But - what a beautiful idea... A retro, FF camera, simple (don't really need the video at all), theoretically optimized for manual focus (wouldn't be opposed to a really nice autofocus system, but not at the expense of manual focus)...

It does need a photoshopped handgrip attachment (like you can get with the Leica M8/M9/M cameras)...

I'd prefer mechanical shutter, that is with advance lever to charge the shutter.
No film roll but shutter can be made with spring. It would save batteries even more.
Give back thumb-lever shutter advance, move exp. compensation back to left top, move top LCD back beside color LCD.
No video, no AF, no continuous shooting. This is a cult camera for such small market at $3,000

Curses, the hotshoe is different to my SF7, SFx, *istD, Q, K100D, K-7, and K-5.

I'll have to buy new flash guns and radio triggers.

Well, that sinks it. Too bad, Pentax is doomed. /sarc

Seriously, that is one beautiful camera. I have never been a fan of the "stripped down almost manual digital theory", but ohh is that pretty. Setting reality aside for a moment I'm sure that would cost several thousand definitely into Leica territory but I actually think it would sell (in limited quantities).

My hat is off to the photoshop artist, that is a remarkable job!

The back is replaceable on several of the Pentax film cameras. I had always wished for a digital data back for my Super Program that popped a sensor in place of film. I was a bit disappointed with calling a data back that just burned a date into the film 'digital'.

Yes, indeed. My first SLR (bought in 1968 for $180 when I earning about $70 per week) was a Spotmatic. It was stolen a few years ago.

I love the idea of a digital Spotmatic. That was my first SLR and I still have it (and another I bought a few years ago). Perhaps its just the sentimental value and the memory of all the dishes I washed in high school to save the money for it ($220 in 1967), but I still find it to be one of the most pleasing cameras to hold. Too bad they'll never build it.

How about one that Pentax did build, although they built only one. The Pentax AP50. It was created in 2007 to honor the original Asahi Pentax 35mm SLR, introduced in 1957. Its a bog-standard K10d, with the black top removed and replaced with a Spotmatic styled pentaprism housing, sans hot shoe and pop-up flash.

I really, really, really want one of these.
