*ist DS flash delay issue

Hi all, I'm having a strange problem with flash on my DS.

Setup:

DS in manual mode,
shutter speed 180 (tried it at 125, 90 & 60),
manual focus selected,
flash mode set to Manual Discharge,
AF-500FTZ flash,
3 meter cord with hot shoe adapter F,

Problem: I'm copying slides using a Spiratone Vario-Dupliscope - I mount the slide in the 'scope' point the unit at the flash and press the shutter release - nothing happens for about 3-5 seconds then the picture is taken (shutter operates and flash fires). Why the delay when everything is set to 'manual'? The results are good, but the delay is frustrating.

have you got the camera set to timer? check by pressing the fn button and then up.
