Info! - Pentax Camera Calibrations with 3rd Party Lenses

Maybe informational post for some people and then I just talk later on in post
-------------------------

So I call Pentax today to get information on camera calibrations. First, let me say they are awesome. They literaly picked up the phone on the second ring. And the voice was human. Wow.

Anyway: I told the guy my story -- I have a K200D that seems to be front focusing with various lenses (see this forum or SLR lenses forum about Tamron 28-75mm). For info: My camera, in various degrees, has front focused with AL II kit, Tamron 70-300, two copies of Tamron 28-75mm.

He tells me what I've sorta read before but never from official sources:
-------------------------------------

QuoteQuote:
Pentax cannot calibrate cameras on 3rd party lenses. Their connection and lens specifics are unknown, and the camera cannot identify 3rd party lenses to save the calibration in the first place.
Overall the guy was very helpful and double-checked to see if it was possible, but unfortunately one cannot sent a non-adjustable camera (AKA a non-K20D camera) to Pentax with a third party lens for calibration

I also asked about K20D in-camera -- He said that yes, it should work with 3rd party, but you may have to manually type in a description of the lens (since camera cannot auto identify), then select this lens when you place it on the camera to enact the focus adjustments. Any owner confirm this operation with 3rd party lens?

Sorry if this has been posted, but good information!

--------------------------
--------------------------

Now that that's settled -- I'm going to upgrade to K20D! I like my K200D (even with the FF problem), but I'm yearning for "more". More everything.

I'm about to sell my truck and hopefully get $1900 U.S.

I plan on :

K20D - $989 after rebate
DA* 50-135 - $650 after rebate (portraits, event photography, walk around)
DA 55-300 - $349 (Minor birding, animals)
------------------------------
$1988 after rebates.

It's a shame Pentax doesn't have a longer zoom in the $700 range...I would return my Tamron 28-75mm to Amazon and combine that cash with the 55-300 money for a longer / faster telephoto zoom.

I think I'm going to refund the Tamron anyway and get the DA 16-45mm, as with the Tamron I have too much overlap with the 50-135 and the 16-45 lets me go wide...plus, I will have all Pentax glass! I think I get a cookie for that! Really like this Tamron, though, and highly recommended.

Sound like a plan? Would anyone do different, considering my situation?

I can only confirm that the K20D/K10D don't recognize third party lenses. The EXIF doesn't show a lens name/description, only focal length. I didn't have to adjust my lenses for FF/BF, so I can't say how it works with third party lenses.

The reason the EXIF-decoding software doesn't correctly display the name/description for third-party lenses is due to it only having Pentax-made lenses in its list.
I've never seen a K20D so I don't know anything about the calibration on that.. but if it can display lens names, it too probably only has the Pentax names in its list.

... my 25 cents...

WOW... you're going for a do-over...? T-O-T-A-L-L-Y

If I could have a K100D - K20D 'perfect world' do over'...

I'd pair my rough and tumble K100D with a DA 40 Limited, the DA 55-300, and a decent PP/Pano software package, then STOP...! 95% of my bases will be covered. The 55-300 provides great reach and with the DA 40, I have two killer walk-around lenses. In fact, while I find the 55-300's IQ marvelous, the DA 40's IQ is so good on the K100D, it almost brings tears to my eyes.

As my interests, budget and Pentax lens designs evolve, I would consider adding a K20/30?/40?D (or whatever), the DA 21 Limited and FA 50/1.4, plus the DA 35 Limited Macro (perhaps) and DA 70 Limited (maybe).

Don't get me wrong... I LOVE my K20D. It's a thoroughbred that levitates above awesome... a authentic and genuine keeper. When paired with the 40 and 55-300, it DOES bring tears to my eyes.

Anyway, back to reality... I'm a just your typical curious garden variety photo hobby-ist. I have no aspirations to be a professional "pho-tog". As things stand now, a simple set-up consisting of a K100D, DA 40 Ltd and DA 55-300 combo would keep this puppy happy for many many years. (IMHO)

Your needs may differ, so ....nuff said...

*sigh* Darn you Michaelina2 for throwing a wrench into my well-laid plans!

Thanks for the input -- i'm certainly thinking things through as we speak. It's both daunting and fun thinking things through...so many options!

Hi Cputeq,

I would suggest you can bring the K200d "kit" (or body + any Pentax lens) for a fine-tune first. Afterwards, the preformance for other third party lenses could also be better!!

Other, my bother just help me to submit my K200d Kit to the repair centre in Kowloon (Far away from my home and work place). They suggested a "general check". I told my brother that they must write down "FF", Actually finally they mentioned on the receipt "focus not standard"

His claimed statement does not make sense to me at all. How can any K20D user to "manually type the description of a lens" *at* the camera. Does he think that our cameras are PDAs or notebooks? ;-)

"Type" probably not the best word, and he didn't use that, he said "enter" I got lazy and typed "type"

Perhaps to use the scroll wheels to enter text for description or select numbers? no idea if/how this works.

Your original question regarding the K20D and 3rd party lenses, .....yes....The camera recognises them as individual lenses and you can FF/BF adjust and save each 3rd party lens the same as the Pentax ones.

Having said that, I find the K20D sees both my 10-20mm Sigma and my 17-70mm Sigma as the same lens, all the other Sigmas I have successfully registered seperately and recognised when attached.

When i started dealing with Pentax Canada about my focus issues, they said to send in
the offending lens, and NO third party ones, they would not even look at them.

My Sigma 300 F4, shows up on exif as a FA 300 Pentax lens,

Both my Sigma 28-70mm and Tamron 75-300mm lenses are recognized by my K10D. Both are correctly identified in PhotoMe as to lens and focal length etc.

Each lens has a lens ID. Unfortunately, 3rd party lens IDs aren't unique. To clarify things as much as possible, let me provide the full list as known today:

So, if anyone has any lenses not in that list, try exiftool, see what it shows under "Lens Type", and post your results here.

I'm fairly certain that in the actual EXIF, each lens is only identified by a numeric identifier. The EXIF reader/interpreter translates this number into a lens description.

For most third-party lenses, good EXIF readers (such as Phil Harvey's definitive ExifTool) will properly identify them. There are exceptions:
Some third-party lenses share identifiers. For example, ExifTool correctly identifies my Quantaray 70-300 as a Tamron 70-300 (which is indeed what it is - Ritz Camera rebadges the Tammy as the Quantaray.) It does not correctly identify my Sigma 17-70 due to an ID collision - it IDs it as something like "Tamron (some specific lens) or multiple Sigma lenses".

So if you have multiple Sigma lenses you might have a problem of the K20D thinking they are all the same.
