I've owned a *ist DS for more than 3 years and always felt it is too noisy, even at low ISO. I don't know if it is normal or mine is particularly noisy, I've seen other images taken with that model and they doesn't look bad, I always use NeatImage to clean them up. It bothers me because I'm not friends with noise for I shoot primarily fashion, glamour and beauty. Anyway I'm buying a K20D soon but still I'm curious. Thanks for any input.

I have two ist Ds cameras. I've never had a problem with noise until I get into my long exposure astro work.
What settings are you using? Shutter speed, ISO, etc?

tell us about your shooting style (mode, output, etc)

how you handle your post processing etc.

I'm really surprised to hear that. If you can post some shots with the exif data intact that will help us to provide you with a half sensible answer.

Otherwise we're just guessing.

I think you have a bad copy of the *ist Ds - the following:
PENTAX Photo Gallery
is printed a 20x30 inches and hangs in my wifes office. No issue with noise, you can not see anything "bad" unless you press your nose up to to corners with a magnifying glass.

Sorry you have a bad copy - or you are way to picky.

I never had a problem with noise with the ist ds that I had.

Here are some samples, I cropped them for they are fairly big, but kept them the closest to original as possible. I shoot RAW so I converted them to TIFF and then to JPG for this exercise. I'm including the finished image as well. Thanks for all the responses.

I honestly see no noise in any of those. I think you're just pixel peeping.

Well, I guess because of the size of the image is not apparent, I'll crop tighter in problem areas, should be more clear. The images are too big and flickr won't accept them full res. Thanks for replying.

The noise may not be apparent in these shots at this size, but the original skin texture is, as is the fact that your PP actually removed almost all of that. So no matter what your crops may eventually show about the noise levels in the original images, these are already enough to see that the originals look *MUCH* more realistic than the processed versions.
