Returning K10D Vs K200D Vs K20D

Guys

After my short stints at Canon and Nikon, I am seriously considering returning to Pentax but not really able to make up my mind on which camera to go. I read all similar threads here and that instead of helping added to my confusion. I am keen on K20d but price difference between K200/K10 and K20 is nearly $125 won't to know if that's really worth it for my shooting requirements below?

I am a hobbyist with main interest is in occasional landscape and cityscape, casual and family portraits child photography with casual low lights like evening shooting at home/hotel dinners etc.

Look at it this way. If you buy before July 31st, you can get a three (3) year warranty for the $125.00 difference in price. That's $62.50 per year in decent insurance and...

... free live view, free faster AF, free more MP, free added DR, expanded ISO, free... etc., etc.

It's worth the $125.00. That was the difference in price a while back between the K10D and the K100D Super. I was glad I did the K10D.

woof!

Any camera is capable of doing what you want; you're paying for the ability to do it all a little *better*. How much better, and is it worth $125 to you? That's something only you can decide, really. Between the K20D and K10D, I'd choose the K20D every time, because the K10D has pretty much *no* advantage over the K20D. But the K200D does have the advantage of smaller size / lighter weight / AA batteries, if those things appeal to you. Whether it's worth what you give up (smaller viewfinder, fewer buttons & dials, etc) is again, something only you can decide.

Hi Sagar,
We have both the K200 (wife) & K20 (self) in our household. I really dont mind which camera I reach for as both do the job.

If the money is important to you, then the answer is obvious, if not, go the K20.
Cheers
Grant

Echo the above sentiments.
K20D has advances over the K10D/K100D where it matters - better sensor (with more resolution, if you're that way inclined), custom AF adjustments for each lens, expanded dynamic range capabilities and fewer issues with P-TTL flash aberrations.

Having said that, the K10D and K100D are fine cameras also. In most cases, you'll be hard pressed to find any appreciable difference in results on screen (not at 100%) or printed at smaller than A4 sizes.

- The K10D and the K200D both share the same sensor (more or less).
- The K20D has more resolution and sensitivity (ISO)
- The K200D has AA batteries and the K1/20D use a very potent LiIon battery. Don't know what is better...
- The K200D is lighter, easier, less controls, less to get wrong.
- The K1/20D have more controls, less "push here dummy" content and a better viewfinder.
- The K20D has a poor mans life view implementation.
- They are all weather sealed.

I think, I'd go for the best price reading your requirements. If prices were the same, probably go for the K200D (weigth, simplicity)
They will all do the trick.

Battery grip for K200D (DBG3) is a lot, lot cheaper too than the DBG2 (K10/K20D grip)..and both are still weathersealed giving you the same controls.
Only difference is one takes "AA" (K200D DBG-3) and the other (DBG-2) the "Li-Ion" batt of K10/K20D.
If you eventually would want to get this accessory in the future.

I have a K200 and it's the best camera I've owned (from 6 DSLRs Olympus 300, 410, Canon 350, 600, Sony A290, A57) and although I can't speak for the K20, it is my understanding that CCD sensors (as found in the K200) are superior to CMOS (as found in the K20. CCDs have been around longer and so the technology is tried and tested, and have better light sensitivity giving superior IQ. Having owned 3 cameras with CCDs and 3 with CMOS I think I can confirm the IQ is better with the CCDs even though they have less MP.

I am only interested in taking pictures, not videos, and have no use for live view - these are gimmicks to entice non-photographers to buy expensive DSLRs when a cheap compact would probably do them. I don't care if I have use buttons or menus to change settings because other than ISO, WB, aperture and shutter speed I rarely change anything (I was brought up with film cameras obviously) and WB is not essential if you shoot RAW. Sensor size is irrelevant these days - I'd say 8MP is the lowest I'd want in a SLR and in a compact I'd be happy with 4MP. Most people don't see the difference in MP when viewing photos at normal size and frankly it's all got a bit silly now with cramming 16MP or more onto a 1/2.3 sensor (my pocket camera is a Canon SX160 IS with 16MP and I'd say at least 8 of those MP are a waste of time and do nothing but add noise to images.

Anyway that's my opinion for what it's worth (no need to respond to that!)

I had both and just preferred the K200D over the K20 in terms of size, handling, AAs, etc. I may not have learned the technical advantages of the K20 enough to appreciate it, but regardless I sold the K20D and kept the K200D. Just like that camera. I have a K-01 for lower light, funkiness and fun, and suppose next step will be K5II but I still have a lot to get out of these (and my Fuji X100).

Biff there is too much technology in cameras now and people are forgetting the 3 basic rules (well the 3 rules I use) which are lighting, composition and subject. If you have an eye for a good picture you can leave your camera in auto and not worry about anything except perhaps aperture. In my opinion

I don't know if it makes a difference to you, but the K10D and K20D have dual control wheels and I believe the K200D only has one. I find the dual control wheels much more intuitive to use if you like working in manual mode.

I guess it's down to personal taste and what you're used to, but I find it just as easy to use the menus now.

I use the K200D all of the time except during my concert photography. Love the way it renders color. It's not bad in low light either.
Here is an ISO 1600 shot.

Nice work John. Proves you don't need the latest zillion pixel Swiss Army camera to get decent shots.
