Thank you! I'm very new to photography, but I'm quickly becoming a fanatic. There is so much to learn...

It's that time again...

Took this snap while working in the basement(renovating). I was also keeping an eye on our daughter while she did her homework(hens the motivation).
I don't usually shoot JPG and with good reason, but for some reason my camera was switched to JPG mode without my knowing it.
So, as a JPG hater, I didn't bother to do anything to the image(NR sharpening etc).

K20D, ISO6400, 1/60s, 50mm, f2, Out of Camera JPG, no PP.

A few shots from the stands during an American football game. All shots with the Pentax K-7 at ISO 6400. I used Topaz DeNoise for noise reduction.

Well if I would have read the title prior to coming into the thread, I would of prepared for the worst!

But I have to say, these are far better than I would have ever expected.
This holds especially true as they are in the conventional range of shooting also.

If anybody is looking for good noise reduction and runs linux, I am getting great results with the newly developed Darktable. Check it out.

Looks very interesting.
Any idea how it would compare to ACR or 3rd party plugins like Denoise?

No sorry, I have no experience with either program. Windows was banned from my usage in 1994 when I went OS/2. I have been running linux since 1998. But I can say that if anybody is looking for a reason to shoot in raw rather than jpeg, the improvement in denoising over the past several years is one good reason. I love revisiting old photos that I thought were doomed only to be overjoyed by much better results with the new software.

Hey Dave,
Looks like Big East Football - UConn vs Rutgers? Those pics could be hanging in the school's athletic dept. I like my K7 too, but those pics show how it can be done. Glad to see them (no matter who won). And, to go On Topic, I think the K7 can do well at higher ISO - your pics demonstrate that.

I presume you mean "wavelet". The following plugin, maybe ? Wavelet denoise | GIMP Plugin Registry

That's the one I use, and I really like the results. I generally just blur the heck out of the Cb and Cr channel, and leave Y alone.

Thanks Bick! Yes, that was from the uConn vs. Rutgers game. I have great seats so bringing the camera is fun.

I'm loving my K-7. I just upgraded from the K-10D about 5 months ago. Next game, weather permitting, I plan to bring my Sigma 70-200/2.8 lens. Its big but it should help with faster shutter speeds.

I'm anxious to see what the K-5, and its successors, can deliver.
