K-x over D5000. Am I wrong?

Hi, this is my first post here so I would like to thank all the other posters for the great info and discussions.

I ordered my K-x on Friday last week. Tonight I saw an ad for the Nikon D5000 so I went online and checked it out. Looks pretty cool I must say, especially that swiveling screen. I had a small twinge of buyers remorse.

I chose Pentax mainly because the only manual camera I have ever owned is my still trusty P30n. I also have 2 great lenses that I will be able to use with the K-x. I also liked the specs and reviews on the K-x.

Both cameras have what I am looking for but I am wondering whether the D5000 would have been a better entry level DSLR.

Anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

Thanks

Welcome here.
Aside from the tilt-swivel screen I can't see any other advantage the D5000 has over the K-x. As you're probably aware, the K-x has the best sensor amongst almost all APS-C cameras, and thus gives you cleaner high-sensitivity images. Then there's Pentax's backwards compatibility which the D5000 cannot boast of, which permits you to use any lens you can attach to the K-x.

Something tells me you'll be happy you went with the K-x over the D5000 - any better and you'd have to spend about twice the K-x's price to get a better specced camera.

Well, I am not a pro, but from an economical point of view, you save on the camera, you save on lenses because you already have two lenses and you will eventually save a little because of in body stabilisation vs lens stabilisation. Also, better iso performace in the Kx. Howerver, for e the AA batteries ont the Kx is annoying...Overall, K-x!

Whew! That's what I thought but it's always good to hear from someone else.

Thanks for the input. Feeling a lot better now and looking forward to getting the K-x on Monday.

Glad you're feeling good about your new gear.

My first DSLR was a K100D. Great camera. But what I found out while using it, was what I expected to be important and what actually became important were two different things.

I never expected in body SR to be so usefull.

Not to mention save on weight!

I think the swiveling screen is only one more thing that can get snagged somewhere and broken off. I know that's what would happen to me.

The D5000 is a cute little camera, but it has much less backward compatability with Nikon lenses since it doesn't have an in body motor. I think you'll be quite happy with your kx. All in all, the Kx has a pretty amazing package, out performing the Nikon in almost every respect.

Right - that can't be emphasized enough. I mean, Pentax always has an advantage over most other companies in that even old manual focus lenses can be used and will meter, and *all* AF lenses made for Pentax work perfectly. But with the D5000, not only are there exposure issues with manual lenses (at least, that's my understanding), but probably more than half of the AF lenses made for Nikon won't focus with it, because the camera lacks the focus motor. If you want AF, you're limited to the relatively smaller (and more expensive) set of lenses with built in focus motors. Between that and the shake reduction of the Pentax, there is really no comparison - the D5000 is a *vastly* more limited camera, and no swiveling of the LCD can make up for that. Beides, DSLR's are meant to be used with a viewfinder, not an LCD - "liveview" is really only for the pretty rare occasions when the viewfinder isn't practical.

You'll definitely appreciate using old lenses, go out and have some fun!

The most common complaint about the D5000 is not being able to use some Nikon lenses with AF.

I too hesitated and hesitated between T1i and K-X, until I found pentaxforum market place and the awesome lenses that were listed there....

Lenses, lenses, lenses, the most important thing to outstanding pictures besides photographer competence.

Had my K-x for a week and It is the best camera I have owned. The ability to shoot high ISO at this price point is fantastic! The only limit on image quality is the person behind the camera.

There is an issue with the double a batteries but that said, I love my K-x.

What makes the Kx more backward compatible? Does it have an in body motor for focusing?

Thanks
