Hey guys!

Super impressed with the kx. i was out winter camping and ice climbing for the past few days and i used 1 set of batteries for over 300 shots in -20c to -35c and the meter was still in green lcd was a tad bit slow but af and everything else was rocket fast! also my buddies had their oly's and nikons out and they were shelved after a few hours on the trip. KX rocked the house... great pics climbing, camping and on the hikes.

Thanks, Andrew, for sharing... it is certainly nice to know that K-x can perform so well in cold weather. This is just in general, not particular to K-x, that the pictures tend to underexpose a bit because of the bright snow - which can be adjusted using exposure compensation.

I've tried adjusting the levels, it's tricky to get them right... not blowing out the whites but getting the colourfull outdoor gear to shine. any tips, right now all i have been playing with is.... wb, exp, contrast, saturation, and upper and lower limits of the colour zone (slider things on i photo under the histogram)

check out the 'curves' adjustment in photoshop.

Image - adjustment - curves. It might help.

Examples would help too, we'd be happy to edit one or two for ya!

I sometimes do adjustments in the RAW converter (sometimes in ufraw, sometimes in Aperture), while paying attention to the histogram. Also, perhaps, if the highlights already lack detail, you shouldn't worry about blowing them. Adjust EV + around 1.0 and see how it works for you.

It looks like you changed the color balance (to a "wrong" one) and the red looks over-saturated.

Here's the photo with EV + 0.75 (in Aperture 2). According to the histogram I didn't clip much--if anything. The main hump of the histogram is in the middle, the hump of the shadows is near the left side and the highlight hump is symmetrically on the opposite side. (The blurry quality of the image is due to pentaxforums compression.)

I am very UNsophisticated when it comes to PP -

... saw your photo and the other adjustments and thought I'd give it a quick try -
literally did it while I had the post-reply open on the screen - took less than 1min.

I used a very old version of Ulead PhotoImpact 8 that I got free from a UK magazine some years ago.

1) adjust Brightness/Contrast - go to the point where the highlights were unacceptably blown out, and backed it down from there.

2) adjust Midtones (in Highlight/Midtone/Shadow) to bring up the midtones

2b) may have to undo everything and redo the Brightness/Contrast to a shade less if the midtone adjustment makes the highlights look too blown out -
sounds strange - but the "details" in the highlights are "midtone".

3) adjust Focus by "1" (seems the same as default Sharpness) just to bring out the acutance/details.

My PP is UNsophisticated....
but that does not mean I am a novice -
as I PP on average 10-12 photos every single day -
I shoot a lot, and PP a lot -
(please take a look at the top Link in my sig for my more recent photos)
so I want my PP to be quick - and that's why I shoot JPGs
(see my posts in Do people really shoot in JPEG??? starting with Post #122 )

So my PP is very simple minded -
and visually based -
afterall a photo is visual......

@ Taikonaut: i use duracell aa rechargables with their 15min charger (worth the price) batteries are : aa/HR6/DX1500 NimH 1.2v and 2000mAh
