New K-x firmware?

After seeing a thread at the DPR forum (firmware version K - x 1.01.00.10 available on Pentax Japan site: Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review). I downloaded a copy of the firmware from the Japanese Pentax site today.

I compared it to the one I downloaded a few months ago when I upgraded to v1.01.00.07. Although the file names, time stamps, and file sizes are similar, they have different md5 checksums. Yet nothing is documented on the website itself.

Does anyone have an idea about what's happening here?

Do a search here; there seem to be two versions.

that's another "silent update" good catch.

Odd. The website shows the release date as 2009/12/3. Also, the properties of the .bin file show as created November 28, 2009 and modified November 26, 2009! Has anyone here installed this yet?

release dates and version numbers don't change in a "silent update". the only way you'll know that it's a different firmware is to look at the exif information.

you can also compare the fw (bin) files.

i'm optimistic that there are improvements (why release it if there's none?) in various aspects of the camera. SR, usability, battery life, who knows but pentax?

we'll find out as this new FW gets a workout from various kx users.

".10" md5 checksum is
MD5: 4c588f188f673702e7e200f9ab4f160f

".07" version was
MD5: 2c5376d258e834d0c1d445a2d8c34efc

doing a binary compare from the "07" version results in 2395227 bytes difference (about 2mb) or about 20% of the fw has changed. that's significant IMHO.

But it's possible one tiny little change in the source code affected lots of different parts of the binary file. For instance, adding one global variable might change the address of lots of other global variables which would result in lots of inconsequential changes throughout the binary file. Or they added a new function which changed the addresses of all the other functions in the binary file. There's really no way to tell the difference between real and trivial changes without disassembling the two versions, so we've got no idea how extensive the real changes are.

Hi
I just bought a K-X 2nd hand. Is there any way of telling if the latest firmware has been installed?

Cheers,
Pa.

Hold down the menu button when switching on your K-x. My firmware version is 1.01-- the important, official firmware, and not the Japan release that people here are talking about recently.

best way is to take a picture and view it using photome.
look at the version number field.

when you view it by holding down the menu button, you'll see 1.01.
you wont see the 1.01.xx.yy.

only way to see that is using photome on a picture taken w/ the camera
