Hiya

I've just bought an SP1000, its great, although the shutter is a bit sticky. At some shutter speeds (particularly the slower ones) the mirror seems to get stuck up and wont come back down until i change to a faster shutter speed and then take another photo.

any ideas how i can fix this?

1st probable cause - the foam seal in the mirror box is sticky and ratty.
Easy solution - get one of the interslice kits via ebay & replace the seals. This is easy & educational

You can get a generic kit, or one of these pre-measured ones:
Pre-Cut Interslice Seal Kit Pentax K1000, Spotmatic,+ - eBay (item 120514004270 end time Feb-03-10 17:43:22 PST)

So that bit should have foam on it? that might help!

any idea what thickness i might need?

What would be making it stick, the fact that it is opening too far or the fact that the old foam has gone sticky? because its not sticky... there just isn't any foam!

See here:

the foam should be up on top, in front of the focusing screen, to cushion and baffle the mirror when it is up for a shot. See page 3 of the linked pdf for illustration and size.

1+ for Jon Goodman's interslice kits. (See Nesster's post above) They are a tremendous value and shipping is very fast and reasonably priced! He is also a really nice guy...

I got a sticky mirror on a Spotmatic II when I used shutter speeds longer than 1/4 s. After I cleaned and lubricated some parts according to these instructions everything works fine again

I've followed the instructions i found, they were great! Spotty is working a lot better now, but not brilliant. I think it'll have to have a CLA at some point but I'm going to shoot a rew rolls of film now to see what happens

The camera needs a clean and lube. The curtains are running too slow at times to trip the mirror mech and reset. It will feel much better after the cleaning and calibration.
