Today we had our monthly Pentaxians outing here in Singapore. We did some street photos around Little India area. There were quite a few K5 and Kr users at the outing, I'm sure a few others got poisoned by the new cameras and lens, they'd end up upgrading their gear soon

Anyway, I decided to gave it a spin w/ the K5 + DA35/2.4 only, and this combo works pretty well for street photos.

All photos were converted from RAW (PEF) by using the Pentax Photo Utility V4.3 software.


I'll start w/ some Pentaxians. My very first shot of the day (DA35 wide open):

As I said during the outing, this lens is indeed a great performer optically.

You can see this DA35 lens is very good for street photography. And it's fast enough for most light condition, plus it's a very sharp lens, I don't hesitate to use it wide open at all.


The lens produces very nice colorful photos too:












It can focus as close as 30cm, very good for some closeups:













And the bokeh isn't bad at all:












It's like a one for all lens:

I have one question though.

I've noticed that most of your pictures have either +0.7EV or +1EV exposure compensation. Is K-5 metering so conservative? How does it compare to K-7 metering?

Yes, I did use +0.7 to +1, sometimes even more during my shooting. Don't know if it's the lens or the camera. Need to check with other lenses to find out.

well, the new DA 35 is too harsh for taking portraits ( it is this kind of harshness that drove me away from Nikon).

Wondering what color mode are these shots taken?

With contrast/saturation/sharpness all set to neutral, the colors look very bright and contrasty ( a bit loud for my taste).

This is Diwali time in Singapore, great colorful scenes. I see lots of Indian faces in your photos and some Hindu symbols and idols too.

I think so you're right! I use DA35Ltd for macro only, for portraits I prefer FA43...

I'm impressed mostly by how much detail in present in the shadows. In a few of the scenes with extremely high contrast, there are blown highlights, but this is to be expected from almost any camera. I will be very interested in formal measurements of dynamic range of the sensor in the K-5.

No it isn't. Softening of facial features is easily accomplished with software. If you shoot raw, you can reduce Clarity. Even better is Nik's Color Efex Pro which contains a Dynamic Skin Softener filter. Used judiciously, this can produce very natural, smooth skin that does not resemble the Barbie Doll plastic so often seen from less accomplished portrait photographers.

I will take a very sharp lens over a not so sharp one any day.

After seeing these, it looks like I'll be getting a new 35mm. I like it's bokeh much much better than the FA 35mm F2.0 Hopefully I can get a good price for the FA. I'm also lusting more and more for the K-5.

Completely kidding. This lens looks incredible. When we found out that the lens was a 2.4, I remember thinking that it was likely a pre-stopped down design, so that shots would look good wide open.

Shots look GREAT wide open! This looks like one hell of a lens... and I heard somewhere it was FF compatible? Moderate wide for film AND normal for digital... 200 dollars.

I'm very happy right now.

PS Did you find the lens to be a fast-focuser?
