On the English version of the japanese pentax site they wrote about the 645D that it will ne controlable with a PC. Because the 645D and K-5 seems to have some similarities it might be possible to enable thethering later via firmware...

Just wanted to say thanks to all who has chimed in with answers and comments. I have been using Pentax for 14 years and really like their equipment, especially the lenses, but in their effort to be a niche product they are omitting some key features for my needs. I have no need or budget to upgrade cameras at all right now, but when the time comes I will have no choice but to look at other brands for a product that fits my needs.

I voted for a lens roadmap because I figured that may be the only way to figure out what direction Pentax is headed (and whether to abandon them or stay with them)

Nice summary of it...I am the same way, though I only came back to Pentax about 18-months ago but did so with some fundamental assumptions about common features found on every other brand, niche or major. And like you it's case of being engineered out rather than wanting to make a change. All of the reasons I came back to Pentax are still here, it's the things that have been engineered out or not improved which are what will give me no option.

Oh, I understand the reasoning...thanks for that, but seriously it's not like they have to "keep their word" or deliver "on time". Look at the topic for this thread, under the Hoya banner a very significant feature was removed from the line-up with the K-7 with no reason given and no answer about future return of the needed feature. I would never have returned to the brand if the K20D had not offered even the limited form of tethering it offers as it's somewhat usable...

Add to that Hoya could feel the same way, people could use the road map as a way to decide to leave the brand. We are merely mushrooms to them...keep us in the dark and shovel crap over us now and then so no reason to keep us informed about anything. It's a good reason why they don't seem to be developing a solid core of pro's because even Hoya has no idea what they will do with the Pentax brand so for now they throw out some gear every few months while they decide if they are shopping the brand to other companies or keeping it. I think they are just waiting for money economies to pick-up to sell off the photo part of Pentax.

You are right it's not tethering. However with am eye-fi card an ipad and an app called shutter snitch I can take a shot and review it on screen within a few seconds automatically. I can't control the camera obviously but it's a workaround. The ipad can be set alongside the camera and you can adjust the settings directly. Or the ipad can be set before your client so they can see the results and suggest changes. Is it perfect, no it's not perfect it's a workaround and an expensive one at that. I would like tethering believe me but until then this is the best I can do.
How about iPhone? Will it work for the iPhone also?

I love my K-7s, but I am becoming increasingly frustrated with the inability to tether in studio. I have sworn off Pentax for all future purchases, although I don't foresee needing new gear for a while anyway. However, I could be swayed back into the Pentax camp if they were to start offering tethering, and I mean real tethering with real apps like Aperture and Lightroom, not with the lousy Pentax software.

It may seem petty to some, but for my work it's a really big deal. Regardless of how good this new model is I'm likely to be moving to one of the two bigger players next time I'm updating my gear.

So someone please tell me it tethers.
Hi,has anyone tried onone softwares new DSLR camera remote?. Go to www.oneonesoftware.com/university/ select DSLR camera remote in left column and then watch videoes especially Dave Cross in studio.

Works for K-7 - and K-5 too. I bet. Certainly worth keeping an eye on this project, and supporting the developer.

I once had the opportunity to watch a Pentax technician (the Pentax distributor's actually) doing a fault analysis on my problematic K-7, and he was controlling it from a notebook PC.
It seemed to me all kinds of internal camera functional parameters and settings were accessible and could be set from the notebook.

He was using a specialised diagnostic software from Pentax, but I couldn't help thinking its no less than a form of tethering. I'm sure it is not hardware preventing user-level tethering on the K-5/K-7 - its a matter of Pentax getting a software house to produce one for them, if they find it commercially worthwhile.

I suppose those who really needed a solution would be willing to pay for one, if its reasonably priced

Send the man a K-5 and I'm sure he will be happy to build a tethering solution?
Maybe Pentax forums can organise donations to get the guy one.

Hello all,

Today I released version 0.3 PK_Tether on my site,
Now it works with Pentax k-x, K7, K5, k-x, K20D.
I didn't implement all changes what I want, but in next 2-3 weeks I
will not have time to work on it, so I decided to release it as it is
now.
Some functionality (i.e. flash settings) isn't yet available.
If you could check if it is possible to download it, and inform me if not.
And of course I count on deep tests.
You can also inform other uses on yours forums about new version.
Of course any observations, suggestions and proposal are very appreciated.

Next version I plan to mid-late January 2011.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Here you can download the program that controls the K-5 from the PC

As far as I know he only has a PC version.

Also, the EyeFi is intermittent with the K5. Their last firmware broke compatibility.
I now get 50/50 shot at it working or at it corrupting images or displaying "Memory Card Error".
EyeFi is trying to create a downgrade, but its been weeks and no word on it.

So this time, you have two half-baked options.
Still, I am betting on the hacker getting a viable option above the software company putting out a new firmware release for EyeFi.

Am am hoping the tethering software works via Parallels or VirtualBox on my Mac.
