mounted YN-560 flash problem, SOLVED

hello,

i just found one article in the reviews section
which mention the problem i like to describe
here.

i mount the flash on the K-5 and
it will fire only one time then it freezes up.

i mount the flash on the K10d and i can take
photos with flash light as long as i like.

here is how i can reproduce it:

1. mount the yn560 on the pentax k-5 hot-shoe
2. switch the yn560 power to on
3. take a photo with flash mounted
4. take a second photo didn't work.
the flash freezes up, all buttons
stop working (e.g. power button)

there are two ways to get the flash back
to normal function now:

a..remove the flash from the hot-shoe or
b. open and close the battery compartment

now i like to know if this is just a problem
with this particular flash or is it maybe
the k-5 which cause the problem. what
has changed on the k-5 hot shoe? why
does the flash works well on the k10d?
is there a way i can fix the described
problem?

thanks for your time &
greetings,

tx0h

Followed your protocol with my Yongnuo 560 on my K5 - no freezing whatsoever.

Could it be that its not inserting all the way and is perhaps bridging 2 contact points. check how far it inserts on the K10 compared to the k5. just guessing. try locking it down when its fully inserted. i've noticed that when not locked down, they can kinda wriggle loose a bit.

best wishes,

Hi,
I have just bought 2 of these YN-560's and they both freeze up on my K5.
I did find that I could repeat the freeze off camera as well - when you short the centre pin and the metal base plate, the flash will fire - if you keep it shorted the flash locks up.
So there must be a compatibility issue with the K5 flash trigger circuit.

What I have done to get the flash to work is taken the base off the flash (four philips head screws in base) and wired a capacitor in series with the red wire going to the centre pin of the base plate. Of course this will void your warranty, but I personally do not value a return to China warranty very highly.

The flash works fine now - however burst is still a problem, but that's OK in my situation.

Hope this info helps someone out - PM me if you need more info

hi jimbob,

thats sounds nice. can you give a rough sketch or photo of your manipulation? what kind of capacitors etc.

thanks,

I will try this when I get home later, I've just received 2 versions more YN-560 and I've noticed that they have different foot design. Well, I can't remember which foot design is new and which is older, since I've mixed them up before noticing the difference.

1 set of my flashes has an all metal foot, it has a small metal pin in the middle isolated by thin ring of plastic. The 2nd set of flashes has a mostly metal foot, but the plastic insert which separates the middle pin is much bigger, big enough I think not to touch any of the extra contacts.

Once I give it a go I will update if any of this 2 flashes freezes up, since I've never used any of them on camera.

OK here goes - I will try to explain how to get your YN560 to work when mounted on your K5, if you are suffering from this freeze/lockup issue.
My fix is to connect a ceramic capacitor in series on the red wire inside the YN560 flash unit.

1. Select a capacitor that will still allow your YN560 to fire - the easy way to do this is to turn your YN560 on, let it charge up, then trial your capacitor by touching the legs to the base plate and the centre pin on the base of the flash as indicated in the following picture. If the flash fires OK at a reasonable rate (touch legs on and off) then that capacitor should be OK. In my case the capacitor is 25V 0.1MF.

2. Remove the base of the YN560 by unscrewing the 4 screws as indicated in the picture above

3. Take note of how this plug is inserted (picture below) - then un-plug it. The base is now easier to work with.

4. Un-solder the red wire and solder it to one leg of your capacitor - the other leg of the capacitor goes where the red wire was.

5. Make sure that nothing is going to short out. Re-assemble the base and test your YN560 mounted on your K5.

Hope this helps

I too have the freeze problem with yn-560

After investigate , I kind of suspect it's due to the new firmware that prevent the yn 560 (new metal base version) from working correctly with k5 v1.11

History : k5 with v1.03 work fine with yn 560 (metal base)
After film ware upgrade : k5 1.11 freeze yn 560 (metal base)
Test with friend k5 v1.03 : no problem with yn 560 (metal base)

I continue to test with another friend yn 560 with plastic base (older version of yn-560)

Test result : k5 v1.11 ok with yn560 (plastic base)
K5 v1.03 ok with yn560 (plastic base)

Borrow another yn-560( metal base) and test result same .

So I kind of suspect v1.11 work with old yn560 but not new type . While v1.03 work for all.

Can anyone who got both yn-560 and k5 verified this ?

You could be right. It could be thanks to the new GPS features...

I found my solution, it's working well for me.

hello,

to all who didn't succeed with the capacitor solution provided by jimbob (like me):

try a 1kOhm resistor instead of the capacitor. i can flash in series now. no hangs anymore. i'm happy again :-)

warning, this will break the warranty and may damage equipment, this is a standard disclaimer and you really can't blame me if somethings get broken.

thanks to all who didn't ignored my initial post &
greetings,

tx0h

hi,

solder a 1k Ohm resistor
between trigger / middle
contact and flash mainboard
connector.

in the picture:
Resistor Color Code:
brown black black brown
with 1% tolerance (brown)

please send fail or succeed
stories.

thanks,
