New K-5 II -- What to Check?

Hello K-5 II owners.

I'm rather hopeful that I'll be able to acquire a new K-5 II soon and wonder what I should be checking upon arrival.

The only realistic test I can think of is to make sure that the electronic level is not out of kilter.
Anything else I can check immediately?

I understand that further things could go wrong --
  1. Camera freezes (unfortunately appears to be "normal", i.e., firmware induced rather than a hardware problem)
  2. Sticky shutter
  3. Mirror flopping
  4. Lens release button falling off
  5. wheels not working reliably
-- but some of these may be just "K-5 only" issues and also I am not aware of any specific ways to try and provoke any of these appearing.

Is there any reason why I should or should not upgrade to the latest firmware (V1.03) immediately?
There is some related discussion about firmware versions but it doesn't appear to be very conclusive.

Any help would be much appreciated.

EDIT: I got my K-5 II now and luckily had no issues whatsoever so far.

Well I've had my K-5 II.s for awhile now and never had any of the above problems and further to that I've owned two K-5's for quite some time and never had a problem with those either.

Same here - any my K5IIs is about 5700 shutter releases into its life - not even a hint of trouble.

My K-5 IIs has been trouble free from day 1, and I'm not aware of any common problem trends. I would just use it and enjoy it, and worry about problems on the rare occasions they might arise.

Thanks for all the responses so far.

Good to hear so many "no problems at all" stories.

Does anyone think I'll notice any difference to my current K100D?

I received my K5 II + battery grip last month (March 2013) and it works flawlessly.

Nah, it'll be the same. Just better. And different. But the same.

After 6 years I've upgraded from K10D to K-5II yesterday. It's too good to be true

I'm in the same situation, but in just few days since I have IIs, not to many impressions.
First impression was that there is no difference, same size/weight, same viewfinder, same focus indoor, only buttons are little bit rearranged/moved, is not as simple and straightforward as k100d, press by accident some buttons.
But first shock was when I underexposed an image (meaning completely black, flash not fire), in Lightroom with +4ev and fill light I get the same image as an iso 400 correct exposured k100d image. Hope to have other shocks while using it in the next few...years. Anyway k100d a simple fit for purpose camera, pitty it has no liveview, and a large buffer.

I think the K-5 II.s handles colours (especially Reds) and detail perfectly in low light and that has to be a bonus.

Things to check:

- is my bankaccount sufficient?
- am I at home for the delivery?
- can I make free time to use the K-5 II?
- is there something to take pictures off that interests me as a photographer?

I guess we should stop looking for horrorstory's and just go out and take pictures. Enjoy your new camera.

Indeed. There is an old maxim in sociology: 'If a situation is perceived as real, it will be real in it's consequences'. If we believe in witches, we will start to see them everywhere, and start persecuting innocents. Ditto camera horror stories.
