I have 2 K-r units in my possession. The first showed front focus problems and the second is a unit in exchanged for the first one. Serial numbers are 40 units apart (second with a lower number than the first). I also have a K100D Super. All test shots are taken with an FA50 at f/1.4, aperture priority mode, tripod, no SR, tungsten light overhead, tungsten WB, 2 second timer.

Here is the focus test image from the second unit with 0 focus adjustment:

Am I correct in the following conclusions - (1) the second unit has a front focus problem; (2) the -10 adjustment is close but not sufficient; and (3) K100D Super also needs calibration?

Finally, how will Canikons do under similar conditions (specifically interested in D3100 / D7000 / T2i / 60D)?

Calibration is only required if there are focus issues in all lighting conditions. You will need to test this as well. If you find that your camera just has focus issues in tungsten lighting, there is no calibration option that I am aware of. It simply represents a limitation of the camera's AF system.
