K-r at night - problem with capturing blue color

Dear Pentax forum, i'm here with another question (searched on google and the results were in most a BLUE K-r offers for purchase) and didn't gave me the answer I was looking for...

Look at this two photos...
Photo1 and 2 are JPG, a lightroom export with no changes applied....
PHOTO1
PHOTO2

And raw files...
Photo_1[DNG]
Photo_2 [DNG]
Photo_3 [DNG]
Photo_4[PEF]
Photo_5[PEF]
The blue, is not good at all!

So is this a lens fault or the sensor?

Thx,
Aleksandar

I'm no Pro - so I'm sure some one with a better answer will come along, but it looks like crazy white balance maybe putting the blue out of gamut, and noise. The gamut issue can be related to how it was converted to jpg - you might want to share a raw.

Just to be safe... Are you sure it wasn't a blue light in the fountain?

Wow, the raw look so much better... what are you using to convert to jpg?

Just comparing the JPG to the DNG... it looks to me like what ever setting your using is boosting saturation and that is putting the blue out of gamut.

I opened the DNG in Picasa, cropped to ~ 1:1 and exported to JPG

I then processed in Denoise to clean it up...

What do you think?

desaturate the blues or use a different colourspace so that they are not outside of gamut.

Ok, your upload looks ok
I'll try to take a few photos at the same fountain or somewhere with a blue highligh... and see what will happen...

So, this is not an issue for a service repair? I must ask... :P

Tnx Mattt

I dont think it is a service issue. Think of it as "clipping highlights" but in just one channel.... I'm curious, if you still have the SD card loaded, if you can get your KR to show you the clipped highlights - in menu "Bright/Dark Area" - PG 222 of manual

Looks to me like the typical issue with some brightly coloured halogen and LED lighting. Others have posted similar results before.

I know this is an old topic, but I might have something to add. LR4 does edit raw files very differently when set to use the embedded color profile rather than the Adobe standard one. Develop module, last tab.

There is nothing wrong with you sensor - asking this way I have to say there is something wrong with your eyes.

I guess that fountain is illuminated with modern LED light - blue LED light. LEDs do emit light only at a very certain light wave length - not like halogen light which is a mixture of different light wave length so our eye "thinks" it sees blue light.

The problem here is, our eye do not respond very well in the light wave area of blue light, or more technically it sees 450nm light quite badly.
In contrast to the human eye the sensor of your and mine K-r respond as good to blue light as is responds to green light. So let me say there is the light present you see on this picture, but your eye isn`t capable to sense the most of it.

The only possible reaction here is not sending back your very well functioning camera, but making the same thing like on every picture with too much light: step down some exposures and correct it later on in lightroom. There is no other way around that.
