My Kr and Sigma lense

Hello, I am new to this forum but desperate. I have a Pentax Kr and for Christmas my spouse gave me a Sigma DG70-300mm lens. I've been down with a knee injury and finally today went to shoot. I mounted the new lens and when I hit the shutter button nothing happens. A local camera store that doesn't deal in Pentax nor Sigma said the lens is defective. Does anyone have any idea why this is not working?

Does the lens have an aperture ring? If so, make sure that it is set to "A".

When I had that lens on a Canon, it would not trip the shutter unless both the lens and camera were both set to either MF or AF. Make sure the lens isn't set on manual focus.
