I suspect RAW's will look a little better with respect to grain.
Though I have to say... based on these samples, I'm really starting to think that Nikon and Pentax may not be sharing the same sensor after all...
Could it be possible that D7000 has it's own sensor designed by Nikon but fabricated by SONY, whereas Pentax K-5 and SONY A-55 sharing the same sensor? Although the specs appear to be similar.

My friend told me about how Pentax designed its sensor and Sony made it for them. It's Built to you specifications kinda thing.

It will be interesting to see low ISO comparison between k-5 and d7000 too.
I have a sneaking suspicion Nikon have used a cheap consumer AA filter like they did in D90 vs D300.
After all a "weak" AA filter can be pricy and has no marketing value.

Lets not overlook the obvious here.

1. Image exposure...
1. Desaturation in the images(reduced color noise effect).
2. Heavy NR in higher ISO images.

Having said that... if the images were exposed to as to contain the highlights/blowouts(properly), then we would have a more accurate noise reading than what was shown here.

And finally... though I totally understand the need for camera NR, if the D7000 doesn't have the NR controls the K-5 has on RAW images, then there are no doubts on which camera will yield better IQ. Because as sensitives go up, so to does detail retention rise in critical values.

But something tells me were not looking at anything new or shocking at this stage. Pentax has always leaned in favor of detail over that of noise reduction. Which is really good when you think about it, given the recent advancements in RAW and post processing. A factor(in itself) that could position the K-5 above the D7000.

FTR. I think its still too early to determine which positions each system will claim with respect to RAW performance. Though from what I've seen to date, it is looking as though the K-5 may take the lead with respect to image quality against the D7000.

I couldn't agree more! The shot at 6400 suffers from extreme NR (even though it is using the "normal" NR setting, according to the title) and is horribly soft at full size... It is clear that Pentax does not use heavy NR like Nikon, but whatever your preference, it should all work out in the wash with RAW files.

I am still using the K10d, but the K5 seems finally to be enough of a justification to upgrade. I would say that ISO800 on the K10d compares to somewhere in between 6400 or 12800 on the K5 - a 3 to 4 stop improvement! More importantly, however, is that the DR seems to be holding up much better at higher ISOs. (The K7's higher ISO DR was ATROCIOUS and, frankly, embarrassing.)

It would be interesting to see side by side samples of A580, K-5 and D7000 to see who squeezes out the best performance out of the 16MP Exmor sensor.

The real competition would probably be between the K-5 and D7000 based on the dxomark scores for the K-x and A500 both of which are built around the 12MP Exmor sensor.

This is a game changer - being able to source the same sensor is probably akin to using the same film.

If representative, the K-5 high ISO performance is impressively better than the K-7's. Now let's see comparison of acuity and dynamic range at max IQ - low ISO, RAW, tripod mounted images through a sharp lens at optimum aperture.

The K-5 DR is clearly better than the K-7 in these samples. Note the out of focus background left center. See the blue edges of what looks like a calculator popping out in the K-5 that are invisible in the K-7 image? Colours are cleaner in the K-5, too.

Looks good.

I noticed the higher ISO samples are all above 1/4000 shutter, which gives me the feeling that the images were shot to minimize noise as much as possible.

Either way, I really look forward to seeing some RAW samples from the D7000.

These early D7000 (very-) high iso samples need some explanation:
There seems to be a bug in the exif file info when looking to the images in Nikon View (2) or Capture NX. While it shows iso 6400 setting, in H1 and H2 it shows "1EV over 1600" and "2EV over 1600", which should be "1EV over 6400" and "2EV over 6400"

These Nikon samples are UGLY. Yellow skin in all of them. I could never switch to Nikon.

I beleive that is a consequence of the lighting.

High-ISO photography under very very bright lighting isn't telling you anything. The K-x would do just as well under those circumstances.

Drop the lighting level to the point where you need something like 1/30 sec at f1.7 using 6400 ISO or 12800 ISO to get a good exposure. That puts the camera sensor and on-board imaging engine to the test.

My thoughts exactly. You don't shoot at high ISO just to shoot at high ISO. You do it when the light level requires it. Let's see some faces by candle light at 6400.
