Interesting (although probably another lens we will never see). My only surprise is that considering it's such a super-zoom and the speed the * designation for it.

Actually there are at least two such patents:

1/ The first one, filled 2008/08/08 and published 2010/02/18, relates to a 26-340mm f/3.6-5.8 with 20 lenses

Pentax DA?25-350mm F3.5-5.6 SDM??????????So-net???

2/ The second one, the one you quote, filled 2009/05/22 and published 2011/01/13 (yesterday), relates to a 26-340mm f/3.3-5.7 with 16 lenses including 2 ED elements.

Pentax DA*25-350mm F3.3-5.6ED [IF] SDM??????????So-net???

As APS-C lenses, they could be seen as the equivalent to the 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 "Bigma" on FF bodies.

One bizarre lens....seems faster at the low end than the 55-300 though...bet it's huge compared to 18-250 too...

it's weird, isn't it?
And this one will not be a DA*, all DA* is with a constant max aperture.
this one, could be a plastic mount DAL anyway.

Does this suggest SDM is here to stay? I am waiting to buy a 16-50 and 60-250 until SDM is updated but wondering if the day will come.....

I was under the impression that DC (Direct Current) was the next generation motor for Pentax lenses and would replace SDM. I have no reason to believe this other than the fact that DC drives the new 18-135. Seems odd that they'd release forthcoming lenses in both DC and SDM. Am I missing something?

Pentax could use both DC (on entry-level and mid-range lenses) and SDM (on high-end lenses). Sony does the same (SAM / SSM), Sigma (no name / HSM) and Samsung (no name / SSA) too, just to name a few.

That is what the Pentax reps have said. DC motors are for lower end lenses, SDM for higher end lenses. Enticing the Light had said this back in November after talking to Pentax reps (Speaking to Pentax at PhotoPlus Expo in New York | Enticing the Light).

WHY would Pentax continue producing SDM lenses? Ok I get how from a business perspective it might make sense (albeit unethically) to stay silent about SDM failure rates, but to put MORE SDM lenses into production????

I think DC motors aren't as silent as the SDM motors and that Pentax feels like their failure rate isn't high enough to warrant a change. Bear in mind that no one has an idea of what the true failure rate is on these motors at five years. Some guess high and some guess low. For that matter, we have no idea if DC motors are going to be any better, since they have been out now a total of three months.

Also, the current SDM motors may not even be the same motors that were initally placed in lenses that burned out. Benjamin Kanarek had his SDM motors replaced in the last six or eight months and was told that they were improved motors over the initial ones (but still called SDM).

Doesn't some other manufacturer use DC motors? I thought I read somewhere recently that a lens had a DC motor for AF in it. Can't remember who it was though....

IMO, DC is excellent (fast, quiet, accurate) but the SDM is silent, not quite, silent, in comparison.

Sony SAM lenses (as opposed to SSM ones)? Sigma lenses in Canon mount, other than the HSM ones?
