Yikes, no it's not old news to me at least, it's very new news. Not sure if it's a good thing though at all....

Hey, pretty impressive that I talked about a buyout of Pentax on a thread just recently here on the forums that a few others believed would not happen - wasn't Ricoh I was talking about though, it was company number two that was looking into the purchase...

This is a very interesting development. Ricoh has a long history in cameras (unlike Hoya) and even made K mount SLRs in the film era. The Hoya purchase was a good thing for Pentax resulting the 645D, K5 and Q system released during that time. But cameras were never a core competency for Hoya. Ricoh on the other hand, buys into multiple awesome Pentax camera systems. I am very optimistic about this move (assuming that it comes to fruition).

Hopefully that means that focus on "the camera business" will increase, and improve marketing, R&D, quality, etc.

Ricoh don't have a DSLR, right?

I reckon this could be a very good thing. Hoya was after the medical side of the business, Ricoh is already a camera maker and they will definitely have more of an interest in developing new technology for the camera market.

My two cents worth...

By the way, I have an old K mount Ricoh 50mm F2 manual that takes stunning sharp images...

As the world turns......... I wonder how much Pentax has been forced to cut back to make their balance sheet look attractive to Ricoh? Obviously we have not seen much lens innovation.

That Sony A77 is looking interesting.......
