Just saw this on DP Review

Sigma 70-200 and 50-150 f/2.8 APO EX DG for Pentax and Sony: Digital Photography Review

Looks like Pentax "no long lenses" days are over... (50-150+70-200 + 150-500 + 120-400 all HSM for Pentax: yay!)

Wonder if this means they've reverse-engineered the SDM connection, or if it'll be another no-HSM-for-pentax thing.

If the former, I hope they go back and update some of their other lenses with HSM support for Pentax.

I notice also a Sigma APO 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM, which will be for Sigma, Canon, Nikon, Pentax, and Sony. I wonder if it's optically stabilized in Pentax and Sony mounts too, and how well that works in concert with the sensor-shift stabilization.

Well the press release says that when the lenses are used on cameras that dont support SDM, you dont get AF. So i think they have finally pulled apart enough SDM lenses to be confident enough to release their own.

Woohoo! Now the only question is whether this is sharper or the Tamron 70-200/2.8. Tamron is probably bummed out that Sigma reverse engineered SDM since the Sigma will probably be faster and quieter :-)

And joy to the world!!!

We now have a choice of Tamron and Sigma? Certainly hope that HSM is indeed a "standard" for Pentax mounts from Sigma... It is proven to be a good performer with the Canon and Nikon users. And if faster than SDM (I indeed hope that it is), I think we have a winner!

I can only hope that once Sigma recognizes the full potential of Pentax, their new and firm place in today's DSLR market, more HSM lenses will be available in "OUR" mount =)

LOL Timing is everything! But again, no one stopped them from trying to do the reverse engineering as Sigma did.

I have absolutely no problems with fully manual lenses, or "A" lenses to focus manually, but when it comes to longer telephoto - to me, fast and accurate AF is more than a plus (as long as it is also a sharp glass)...

Choices is a good thing!!! I only wish that Pentax themselves offered 70-200 f2.8 SDM and 100-400 f4 SDM at a reasonable price, perfect coverage for so many activities, and would have gained more customers from sports, birding and photojournalism regions...

Thats great news, now i'll have to decide if i really want that extra 50mm in the DA* 60-250 or the all round condition shooting that 70-200 offers.....Seems Pentax have legitimate competition now and as more and more support comes along..... Maybe this is one of those years where rather than rushing out and snatching everything as it comes along it would probably be better to sit back and watch the marketplace do its thing. Pentax may well react with an announcement that their gonna come out with some new tele ranges for next year...What ever happens were still gonna have to wait till mid year before we see the new DA* tele anyway...

and the 150-500

but the 200-500 f2.8 isn't for pentax

what a monster that thing is...

msrp for the old 70-200 is $1200
and for the old 50-150 $1050

wonder if the new versions will be different with how cheap the tamron is?

Not sure... If they implement it the same way Pentax did, i.e. using the powerzoom contacts, the older traditional AF teleconverters will not keep AF. They do specify that there will be no AF on bodies without SDM, so there will be no shaft for the body to grip onto. The older EX teleconverters used that shaft and had no powerzoom contacts...

Of course, they will still fit and allow all automatic exposure programs to work and the information from the in-lens chip will still be passed to the body (incl MTF and focal length)...

Pentax should have done the same what Sigma did: Sigma dropped out "skrewdriver" autofocus support and added proper ring ultrasonic motors to lenses instead of putting in underpowered micro ultrasonic motor and keeping compatibility with bodies which are not produced anymore...

Those new Sigma lenses are very very tempting.

But Pentax isn't Sigma. I don't see Sigma doing anything for retro compatibility LOL they already have problems wit hcurrent compatibility
